That's completely false. Depression isn't the same for everyone. Everyone has their own way of coping with it and going through with it. Speaking from experience here, when i was in my darkest place i still hung out with my friends and i still spoke to my family like everything was normal. Because i was afraid if they found out something was broken inside me, they'd treat me with pity. There's nothing worse than seeing your friends pretend to understand how you feel and act completely different when you're not around them. Trust me dude, i lost 2 classmates and both of them were the most cheerful mfs on the outside..
