Not sure if this will apply for compressed version. But, those PC/Mac all-in-one releases are "Ikea style" - some assembly required.
When you extract the zip file right click on "SummersGone_Season1_Steam" mac App and select "show package content".
Now go to Content->resourses and create there a folder called "autorun".
From the folder where are all the unzipped files copy to this autorun folder this files and folders:
game
renpy
SummersGone_Season1_Steam.py
SummersGone_Season1_Steam.sh
now go back and run Mac application, it should work (in the first run Mac will say it is unverified developer and suggest moving to trash, just click done and go to Mac preferences->privacy and security and at the bottom you will see a message that application was block and giving you the choice to "open anyway". Do that.
You might have an error that application cannot be opened (before app will say that it's from unverified developer) the you need to open terminal and type chmod -R a+x and drag from Finder "SummersGone_Season1_Steam" application (or you can type manually the full path to the app, but I suggest dragging. You result command should look something like:
chmod -R a+x /Users/someuser/Documents/Summer\'s\ gone\ /S01/SummersGone_Season1_Steam-pc/SummersGone_Season1_Steam.app
press enter and open app again.

When I extract and run SummersGone_Season1_Steam.exe I do get the files

.rdata
.buildid
.data
.pdata
.tls
.rsrc
When I try to copy those files to the game folder they do not appear in the game folder and I still get the error.
