When a person is depressed, he is not interested in anything, he does not want to communicate with other people, he does not care about school or work. In SG we see how MC communicates with everyone, goes out with a new friend to play sports, and after that he commits a robbery with Bella, etc... Is this how a person who is depressed behaves? That's completely false. Depression isn't the same for everyone. Everyone has their own way of coping with it and going through with it. Speaking from experience here, when i was in my darkest place i still hung out with my friends and i still spoke to my family like everything was normal. Because i was afraid if they found out something was broken inside me, they'd treat me with pity. There's nothing worse than seeing your friends pretend to understand how you feel and act completely different when you're not around them. Trust me dude, i lost 2 classmates and both of them were the most cheerful mfs on the outside..

In fact, Nika said during his first day of college in a conversation with either Nojiko or Nami that he felt an inner drive to overcome any upcoming obstacles. This is the beginning of the struggle of a man who has been immersed in depression and isolation for years to break out of it. Before all the examples of a depressed man you mentioned, this is what Nika life was like.
And yet, how you approach it is up to you - you don't have to meet Jeff at the gym, you don't have to promise Maja that you'll take care of Victoria. You don't have to go on a date with Mila or Victoria, you don't have to get closer to Bella, you don't have to start sharing your feelings with Nami.
