It depends on the genre of the anime. If the characters are adults then acting like that is just weird. But if the anime character is a teenager then of course the tv censors don't want them to seen having sex. Most teenagers are seen as dumb and indecisive because they are young and inexperienced. Interesting fact about that SAO moment you mentioned. Asuna and Kirito did have VR sex that time so canon Kirito is not impotent and a virgin even at the beginning of SAO if you count VR sex.
This is based on canon SAO relationship. Kirito and Asuna have always been the perfect couple. Neither of them was ever interested in anyone else. This is actually one thing I don't like about the series. The author clearly wants the couple to stay together but he keeps adding girls that try to get into Kirito's pants. He never wants to and the girls are just there to give him a "harem" he will never uses. It is like the author is trying to have a harem and one true love romance at the same time which is annoying.

I also think it's unnecessary and superfluous. This is the problem with all harems, everywhere the main character has only one lover, and the rest are just for the harem. The only normal harem in my opinion is dxd

All the stories having the same character is more a problem with fans becoming creators and just wanting to recreate what they like. We can get into the psychology of what girls want but the target audience is young boys so if indecisive powerless virgins is what they think the audience wants to see and it sells then that is all that matters.
That moment is based on the Light novel. So if the manga is based on the LN as well, then they had sex even if it wasn't shown.
There are actual harem shows that gives all the girls a chance even if there is a clear winner. SAO on the other hand the other girls have no chance but still try sometimes to get Kirito even though they must know he won't cheat on Asuna. It is just trying to get the attention of a harem show without it actually being a harem show which is annoying.

If you judge rationally, not everyone likes Asuna, that's why they make a harem where each girl has her own character and appearance, it sells better that way
