Quite a long time ago, Kawahara Reki gave an interview in which he said that he had plans after the first Aincrad arch to push Asuna into the background. She flew out of Japan after the traumatic events inside the game. He wanted to make Suguha his main romantic interest. During the ALFheim arc, Kirito and Suguha learned that they were not related and there were no obstacles to a relationship. And Suguha helped Kirito cope with his breakup with Asuna. But then the SAO fan base (which apparently consisted of radical fans of Asuna) got upset and Kawahara Reki decided not to remove Asuna and slightly changed the plot. After that, there was an Easter egg: Suguha is the only one whom Yui accepts on an equal footing with Asuna.

Perhaps Fujino is a fan of the old ways and is taking revenge for those events.

Yeah it's wild what they did in Part 1. There is severe whiplash when you compare what Asuna and Inoda did. It's also why the first few updates of Part 2 were so horrendous. The beginning of this patch where Asuna pushes Inoda away was a resurgence of that. It's like canon Asuna briefly emerges every now and again who would never allow another guy to touch her.

Asuna's lack of sex in the game to make her want it in real life is a very weak excuse. If Fujino does that, it will be a failure. Remember, in order for sex to happen in real life (voluntary, not violence as in the first part), Asuna must stop loving Kirito, for some reason decide that Kirito is no longer as important to her as Inoda. Fujino made numerical parameters and statuses for everything himself, so focus on them. How much longer will it take before Kirito's love drops below 500, and Inoda's maximum love will grow from 500 to 1000.

There must be some kind of plot twist. Something like Suguha is blackmailing Asuna, and Asuna realizes that the relationship with Kirito is now a fiction. Then yes, she will smile in public, but in her soul she will completely switch to Inoda.

Well that's explain a lot why i always find Asuna a boring/bland by the numbers type of character, if the author wanted to put her in the bench back in the day he maybe thought he could do something better. But otakus and their wayfus.
SAO is just a OK series i never understood why all this hype around it, the characters are weak, the plot would work a lot better as a adventure/action around Kirito, but became this boring teen romance that never gets anywhere, and for some reason it's the most important thing for everyone in the story.

Bro come on. Wdym it never got anywhere, they literally got married in less than 10 eps and adopted a kid. That's most progression I've ever seen in a romance lmao. And Asuna was amazing in Mother's Rosario, Alicization and Progressive.

He designed her at the beginning of his career not really as a character but a collection of all the qualities men would want in a ideal woman. Beautiful, rich, loyal, can cook, strong but not as strong as the man. He only refined her later.

Only later did he improve when dealing with women characters. I remember during Alicization arc he went on Twitter to apologize to the the Voice Actresses of Ronye and Tiese for making them do a rape scene. Men attempting to rape women is very common in SAO!

I agree. The tails of the old Kawahara Reki idea are visible in Suguha's character. Suguha is essentially very similar to Asuna in terms of character, but Suguha has loved Kirito since childhood, and Asuna fell in love with Kirito, in fact, due to the "Suspension Bridge Effect". It's funny that Asuna hardly wrote to Kirito these days. She dumped him because of the trip, asked Liz to keep an eye on him, but otherwise Asuna seemed to be relieved of the burden for this time. Which is not like 900 love out of 1000. Technically, they can communicate in the game. But Asuna somehow wasn't particularly interested in his health in the game. And it would be nice to write a couple of SMS messages in a day, too. It feels like Kirito is an uncomfortable weight for Asuna.

Just had an idea: what if Kirito's hallucinations aren’t what we initially thought? What if it's the opposite—that if Kirito told Asuna about his issue, she’d realize what’s happening and be forced to stop cheating in FOG. But since her need for relief wouldn’t go away, it could lead to an natural transition into IRL sex. As for battle scenes, it’s no problem since it's unlikely Kirito would revisit quest locations a second time.

The only thing to counter argue this is when Kirito feels like he's seeing Sinon naked in the hospital. So his hallucinations happen seem to happen in both places. But there is little evidence of him seeing past events IRL. But I wonder if the theory that IRL is just another virtual reality is true or not?
