If I had to guess dev is still getting next to nothing money wise after a year. $2 an hour is average, 99.9% make pocket change that's not worth the effort and even among those that like it, which are relatively few in this case, maybe 1-2% will pay for it. It's getting a rushed ending rather than simply abandoned as usual. Really making AVNs should be considered a hobby; money, if any at all, is just a nice bonus. And that goes for games in general: this year so far over 5000 dropped on Steam haven't even made their $100 review fee back and I imagine with Patreon and their tighter content restrictions it's even worse (at least no fee to pay up front there I guess).
That's the thing, it IS a hobby.
Very few devs will ever make enough money to call it an actual job and even then it won't last over the years like a career would. The money from making VN's could stop at any moment.
Even some of the bigger devs have jobs alongside making these VN's. I've seen some other devs say if you can't afford to your lifestyle don't get into VN development, it's not a money making scheme and there is a chance you won't make anything.
It's extremely rare for a dev to make a decent amount with their first game, it usually takes time to build a playerbase and could take 2 or 3 completed games before word of mouth spreads.
You do get those devs that don't make what they think they should on their game so abandon it and try a different one. That never works, the trust is already gone. The second worst thing is rushing a shit ending, very few people will pay for a follow up game knowing it's probably going to end in disappointment.
After being here for 7 years and being friends with quite a few devs i've seen it all happen over and over again. The thing that I find most amusing is new devs repeat the same mistakes older devs have made and it always ends the same way.
