I can't get any saves to work from previous files. I've placed them in the same directory and renamed the files, but still can't load a save. I'm using the standalone flash v32 and running the .exe versions if that impacts anything. Any other ideas to try?
I'll assume you're running this on windows... but it would be nice to know which windows version it is, as they may have different save directory paths. Also, IIRC you don't need Flash installed to run the .exe. since that's a fully compiled package, but maybe I'm missing something.
Anyway, I suspect you shouldn't be putting them in the SAME directory. Going by my Win7 installation, each stand-alone creates its own save sub-directory, so you should make certain you're putting the saves in the folder with the current version of the game you're playing.
On Win7 the path is C (or whatever your root is):\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\<MacromediaUID>\localhost\<.exe full path to .exe directory>\Tentacles Thrive\Tentacles Thrive Alpha v4_05.exe
The previous .exe version had the same path except it ends with Tentacles Thrive Alpha v4_04.exe. If you're in the v4_04.exe directory, go up one step, then switch to the current folder and dump the save there.

tl;dr: First and foremost make sure you're putting the save files in the correct version folder (and not the installation folder for the .exe, either).
