I have same problem. I just started with this game, so no old saves used. I narrowed problem to event with agreeing kid from prison to stay overnight. After this event "save" is permanently grayed for me.
EDIT: I've done initial sleepover event, waited 2-3 days, done second sleepover and "save" function is back.
