This game has quite a strong yet dumb fanbase that kept on defending it's devs even after delays and delays over years.Too much trust in a game and dev where he clearly stated years ago that this game was merely a side project.

It was quite evident how things were going to turn out in the end and even if it does drop an update in future it still would end up getting abandoned again.
Back in the day you would pretty much get stoned to death if you said anything about Hopes being a dirty money grabbing dev... Now people have seen the truth. In the beginning updates were quite frequent, 2 to 3 very decent updates a year. Then it became 2 a year and then 1 little super short update that added 3 new scenes, and still at that point people were defending Hopes that such projects like this take time etc. Now he just went poof and disappeared, collected money for a while while doing nothing and then finally froze his patreon without saying anything to his fanbase. Even if you fell out of love with VN making and don't want to continue, have the balls to say: I'm done with this shit. thanks for everything.

I mean patreon is frozen so he's not a "dirty money grabber" it sounds to me more like he had a lot of faith in the project to begin with then it didn't do as well on steam as he thought it would so he just quit

The game made well over $4k on steam as not everyone leaves reviews and devs need to do it the right way.

1. Make a good game and finish it.
2. Social media to push your game to more people.
3. If you do not get as big as lets say Summertime Saga do not give up, it sometimes takes time and may take 2 or 3 games and once people see you have a couple good games and build a fanbase more money most likely would follow, someone as good as this Dev was has a great chance to make $50k plus a year and on years they finish a game and place it on steam and other stores that money could be double and triple.

Devs that read this you need to understand it can take years and more than one game to get to that kind of money, you also need to really love making games and understand not everyone makes the big bucks.

Its funny how the one user who is (was?) still in contact with hopes kept claiming that hopes is still working on it and got super irritated and hostile when anyone mentioned any doubts lmao

And how hopes apparently just doesnt want to say anything here as he wants to come back with an update ... thats so long ago already again that even one great and big update would feel underwhelming at this point and barely bring and goodwill back

Its really cowardly to just keep quiet (and keep earing the steam money) and pretending to keep a project going.

I give most devs some slack, life can be annoying and stuff and i think there are way more cases of burnout than "milking", im not sure i would call it milking here but its vile behavior at this point.

Hes not better as a dev as these devs who only publish early access trash on steam and never intend to finish it at this point.

It is funny you believe that. Sure, he gets annoyed as we all do, but he don't get annoyed of this. It think it is more exhausting for him than annoying.
Also he will only write what the dev told him and what the dev allowed him to share. So, if the dev written/said to him that he is still working on, he will write that (if he is allowed to do that). He don't really have the means (and I doubt he would do that even if he had the means) to check this.

And for the dev himself, I can understand that he won't come here and write anything in this thread. He has no obligation to do that in contrast to whatever you may believe. If he has obligation to someone, then it would be his supporters or customers and not some game sharing board somewhere in the internet.

And if he works or don't work on the game and if he believe it himself only he himself may know that. I'm neither qualified nor earning enough to try to guess that.
My simple guess is, that I assume the probability to see an flesh and blood unicorn in the wild much higher than that this game will be finished.

Dev was a idiot, instead of making short updates, he went for full season and failed to deliver
HopesGaming has not specified a date, so Season 2 could be released at any time.
What are we supposed to do with small updates that usually only contain 5 minutes of content and then people complain?
How long a developer needs to develop something is his decision.

That was at the very end until than he regularly "corrected" people claiming its abandoned. You did that too by the way to a lesser degree but whatever. If you become the mouthpiece of a dev whos apparently not thrustworthy is not great either.

I never mentioned him coming here i think? This is just a pirate site, its was nice when he appeared here but there is obviously no obligation. Im obviously talking about him being silent on his patreon since forever. And even that forever was just a "sorry i didnt wrote anything for a year but im really working on it now!!!!" post after he got his avn abandoned here.

Here we agree. I dont even think the dev is a "bad" guy, my guess is hes has some serious troubles in his life which are more important but still, its just really shitty to keep people who buy his products in the dark over it.

Anyway, the only thing left to do is wait and see if he ever releases something again.

All I want to know, is this game totally dead now, not ever going to be resurrected.

It's like as soon as the Steam version was released the dev stopped working on it.

He never said he was putting out the full season 2 all at once. It was supposed to come in chunks. Largish but several updates for the full season.

The problem was the contract redesign. It made the code more complicated and unnecessarily lengthened development time. Before that updates every 6-9 months. It was a huge mistake and it killed the game.

Well, as I see it, the situation is as follows:

The fact is, the last real update was version 0.9 in the summer of 2023. Everything that came after that, up until the Steam release, was purely cosmetic, just to make it look "pretty" for Steam. After that, there was only ONE image from S2 as a teaser, and that was it.

At that time, I was still active in this thread, hoping that one of the aforementioned colleagues would leak some information that S2 was in "production." Over the months, that hope dwindled more and more, reaching its lowest point this summer. Another developer released an update that took just as long. This update was a complete disappointment in every respect. The developer also has a second visual novel in the pipeline, whose update is still pending. I have serious doubts that this update will be of the same quality as its predecessors.

Which brings us back to this visual novel. At this point, I would even advise the developer to abandon it entirely. I offer three arguments for this:
a) Very few developers have a storyboard that extends to the end of their story.
b) I doubt he's still in the "flow."
c) Season 1

Explanation of Season 1: For me, Season 1 is among the best I've ever played, in terms of quantity, quality, and story, with a cliffhanger that remains unmatched! This level of quality is extremely difficult to maintain.
honestly that kind of cliffhanger only makes me think of ff 13-2 i believe. end on cliffhanger never bothered to make an end for it. rather have a less impressive ending than such a cliffhanger that does the game dirty

This kinda cicles back to my main gripe with the abandonment here.

I dont give a fuck if some slice of life novel gets abandoned, the journey is part of the fun there.

But in cases like here - where its about an interesting and awesome story - everything we got, no matter how good it was, kinda retroperspectively makes the whole thing entirely worthless and meaningless. Soooo much setup, setup over setup just to drop it all.

Everyone can develop a story like that if they dont need to conclude it to a proper ending at some point, you can do so many "cool" stuff when you never have to worry about what happens afterwards or having to explain it.

Lots of tv series are build on this formula, it started back than with lost and lots of others like blacklist and so on, they were all seemingly great stories until the writers had to explain the crytic shit and everything did fell apart and became stupid.

Sadly we will probably never know if deluca family would have been like that or truely awesome.

Completely agree. It was a huge waste of time (he took a year plus just to do it) and it added nothing to the game. Did he gain a single incremental sub from it? (I.e. someone who didn't otherwise really like the story or the girls, but went "oh but its got this mini game where I can wander about blindly on some tiles trying memorize stuff, so I am going to sub") I think not. All it did was kill the momentum of the game.

For some reason I can't unzip the file it gives me the error:

Archive: STEAM_The_DeLuca_Family_-_Season_1.zip
warning [STEAM_The_DeLuca_Family_-_Season_1.zip]: 793848455 extra bytes at beginning or within zipfile
(attempting to process anyway)
error [STEAM_The_DeLuca_Family_-_Season_1.zip]: start of central directory not found;
zipfile corrupt.
(please check that you have transferred or created the zipfile in the
appropriate BINARY mode and that you have compiled UnZip properly)

When trying to fix this issue using zip -fz I get:

Could not find:
STEAM_The_DeLuca_Family_-_Season_1.z01

Not sure what's up with that
