Word count, render count, download size, etc may not matter that much to the player's experience of the game, but they do generally correlate strongly with the amount of development work involved, so they're relevant when discussing how long you have to wait between updates. After all, we're not sitting in 2050, when all the major games currently in development are either complete or abandoned; we're in 2025, waiting for the next update to release...

That’s actually rather a player’s expectation than a reliable indicator of a VN developer’s work. Sure, a high word or render count looks impressive, but those numbers can be inflated quite easily, for instance, by using templates, reusing poses or models, or even relying on AI-generated text and images. You can produce a huge amount of content that way in a short time.

I e.g. know a dev who used templates heavily: same poses, same models with different clothes, even near-identical dialogue. It allowed them to output four times as much content, but the result felt underwhelming because it lacked uniqueness and life.

The real effort lies in making that content feel consistent and meaningful. That’s the invisible part of development. Shaping all those words and images into something that feels engaging and doesn’t come across as random or repetitive is what really costs time.

And that not only differs from dev to dev, but also within the development of a single game. As a developer becomes more ambitious they may try creating better visuals, and adding better and more animations, what takes more time. They may also start running up against the limits of their own ideas, needing to pause for inspiration, rethink their approach or even may just need to try things. That process can lead to rewriting large sections or even remaking images/renders when they realize that what they created initially doesn’t fully express what they actually wanted to convey and also costs lots of time.

I work with authors and publishers of fantasy on a daily basis, I know what the averages look like, and they're definitely bigger today than those results tell you.
Last time I checked, which, admittedly was about two decades ago, fantasy was known for being longer on average than other types of novel. So both "an average novel is 100k words" and "an average fantasy novel is 300k words" can be true

Yeah, Goodhart's Law applies here too - any proxy that becomes a target stops being a good proxy. If a dev isn't seeking to pump their word count as a marketing point, and isn't padding their file sizes with junk bytes, then those things are reasonably good measures.

If a dev knows (or guesses) what you're going to use as a proxy for development time and effort, then they can game the system. On the other hand, while that may make the headlines look better, once someone actually plays their game, it's going to become obvious prety quickly that something's off.

Hey everyone,
Version 0.17 is entering the final stages now. It's not finished, but I have crossed some major milestones. The majority of the content is in a playable state and we are about to start alpha testing. That said, I still have a long way to go before release. I’ve still got several important scenes to render (including most of the sexual action for the headmaster). I want the next update to be out before Christmas, and my plan is to give myself as much time between now and then as possible. Therefore, I am setting a release date of the 12th December for the Beta, the 19th December for the main Patreon release and the 16th January for the public release. I will be making a promo poster and doing a public announcement in the next few days.
I’ve tried to work on several storylines for this update and I have also prioritised quality over quantity particularly for the twins and for Faye. I know these are popular characters, so I’ve put a lot of thought into making their storylines unique and memorable. The downside of working on multiple storylines is that I haven’t gotten as far into each of them as I would have liked. Version 0.17 so far has been a real uphill struggle for a number of reasons. Setting up the punishment system is by far the most labour intensive part of creating this game, and I’ve set it up for both Faye and the Twins. Creating the storylines and tying them into the existing story structure is by far the most creatively challenging part of my job and again I’ve had to do that for multiple characters. After many months of painstaking progress I feel like I’ve just got to the top of a very steep slope with a long stretch of flat ground in front of me. Hopefully, I can now break into a sprint and cover a bit of extra distance between now and the release date.
I also put a lot of work into my animations this update, trying my best to make them as high quality as I can, as well as avoiding rehashing the same old things we’ve seen several times before with the other students. As I said at the start of the year I have been learning to use another similar piece of software (VaM). Although there are no VaM animations in the update (yet), the lessons I took from that software I have brought back to my existing software (Playhome) and I hope you will all agree the results look great. A quick shout out to Gegecucu for his help with several of the animations as well. His skills have also been improving and, in collaboration, we’ve made some of the best and most ambitious animations of the game so far.
Although I will be working on content right up until release day, I am far enough along now that I can say with certainty what is and isn’t going to be in the update, so here is a quick overview.
The Staff Training Storyline (Claire, Debbie and Amy)
Last we left off with the staff training storyline Debbie had been rude to Claire. At the start of the update the headmaster will tell Claire that she needs to assert her authority over Debbie by making her perform an act of submission (just as he did when making her his prefect). However, he won’t be telling her what to do, instead he will be putting the staff training on hold until she figures things out for herself. He believes that punishing the twins might provide her with the inspiration she needs.

As part of this storyline we will see another level for Debbie, plus I updated Debbie’s post punishment interactions with fully nude versions, as well as adding a nude public punishment scene.
We will be having some important conversation with Claire, where they discuss the merits of receiving sexual pleasure from students as well as providing it. Once Claire has come to the right conclusion about how best to handle Debbie, we will be having another staff training session at which point things will really start to really heat up with The Headmaster, Amy, Debbie and Claire.
The Twins

Although there will only be two levels in their punishment system in version 0.17 they will be jammed packed with action. The twins will be starting off their punishment system completely naked and the headmaster won't waste any time introducing some new punishment actions. We will also be finally introducing some bondage into the punishment system with the twins submitting themselves to being restrained to the headmaster’s desk.

As part of this storyline we will see the twins finally manage to prank the headmaster leaving him in a particularly embarrassing situation in public. The headmaster will also be getting to know each of the twins individually, in an attempt to get to the root cause of their juvenile behaviour.

Although we won’t be getting to the end of the twins storyline by any means, we will be getting to the point where both twins and Claire are engaging in sexual activities with the headmaster all at the same time, representing a very big jump in progression for all three characters.
Faye (and Nina)

Now, I want to manage people’s expectations a little about Faye’s content. Faye is a sweet and (fairly) innocent young woman, so by necessity her character progression will need to be a slow burn. We will have two levels for her in her punishment system, with a lot of action packed into each. The headmaster will be talking her out of her knickers and he will be sticking things up her bum, for both disciplinary and “medical” reasons. However, it is very unlikely that I am going to be able to reach any kind of resolution for her character arc in this update. I also doubt we will get to the point where Faye is providing any kind of sexual services to the headmaster in version 0.17.

Faye’s punishment system will play very differently from the other girls. Faye is a gentle soul and isn't incapable of causing harm to others. She refused to use the paddle on Cassandra despite her constant bullying (she also refused to participate when the girls stripped and waxed Ada during the fundraiser). The headmaster will be recognising Faye’s gentle nature and he will be agreeing not to use some of his usual disciplinary tools; choosing instead to focus his attention on a particularly sensitive weak spot.

I’ve hinted at this in the game several times already but I am setting up for a romance between Faye and Nina. Obviously, these two are going to be getting it on, both with and without the headmaster's supervision. We will see a lot of the set up for these two in version 0.17. Unfortunately though, we won’t be getting to any of the really good stuff just yet. I promise not to make you wait all the way until Chapter 3 before we see some cute girl on girl action and there will be more with these two in version 0.18.
Volleyball

At the start of the update, Miss Newman will stop by the headmaster’s apartment in the morning to ask him to help supervise the girls' volleyball lessons. Although I spent quite a significant amount of time on the volleyball scenes at various points over the course of this year, I am afraid to say that I don’t have a huge amount to show for that yet.
The volleyball scenes are logistically challenging not just because of the number of models which need to be posed for each image, but because of technical issues with the graphics software. Normally, I like to play around with the positioning of the characters and the camera angles for a little bit before deciding exactly how to shoot a scene. However, that is very difficult to do when there are seventeen models to pose and the software keeps bugging out. There are also some story challenges to consider as well. As I was writing the volley ball scenes I realised I really need to address some issues with the school rules. Specifically the rules regarding public nudity. I feel I may need to work on the nudist beach storyline a little before continuing further with the volley ball scenes, otherwise I may find I have written myself into a corner. Again, this might be something I need to move to the priority list for version 0.18.
Currently, there are just a couple of volleyball scenes, little more than an introduction really. My priority over the next six weeks is making sure the headmaster’s penis gets as much attention as possible. However, since I have the volleyball scenes set up and I have mostly resolved my technical issues now, there is a very high chance I will find the time to record at least a couple more scenes of the girls jumping around in skimpy clothing or cooling off in the lake in various states of undress. Depending on how far I get with Faye’s content there is a scene for her and Nina on the beach that I would love to include as well.
In Summary
Version 0.17 is approaching completion, the majority of the content is playable and is being tested, but several important scenes are still left to render. It’s a big broad update which starts off two new questlines for Faye and the twins as well as advancing the existing staff training storyline. There are plenty of laughs, plenty of sexy moments as well as some cute and tender ones. Overall, I think there is a lot to enjoy. We are about six weeks away from the beta release and I am going to be working every possible moment between now and then to cram in as much high quality content as I can.

Luckily I caught it, just hours before my subscription is going to end.

The described content seems very modest for close to a year of progress (0.16.4 was publicly released on January 24.). But I assume it will be be more than I picture from reading this update (in terms of scenes, renders, animations and word count). And I am sure that whatever we get, will be of high quality. :giggle:

I have a huge weak spot for any content involving the twins (in terms of both their looks and their antics), and for anything related to Nina. So personally I am very much looking forward to this update! :D
