It's not that I don't understand that their goal was to protect the MC. I don't think they intentionally set out to hurt their child. But I still can't excuse or forgive what they did. They had outs. They could have told him when he was 16 (in the US you can operate a car at that age) they could have told him at 18 (when he becomes a legal adult) they could have told him when he began working (which makes him an independent adult). They opted not to for selfish reasons. At that point it's no longer about protecting him. It's about fearing the consequences.Parents are human beings, they make mistakes and fuck up. (Surprise-surprise, takes years to truly cope with this concept)
Sure, the situation they created by covering up the truth, turned up bad. But they did it to protect you, not to damage you. If the damage was unintentional, it looks like what they did was really stupid, but not an intentional betrayal.
Guess what: look at the MC - a stupid kid likely has stupid parentsMaybe so much dumber you would never believe as a kid.
Stupid does who stupid is (paraphrasing Forrest Gump). The parents are even dumber than the kid.
And even if this is a fictional story you have to take into account the sheer volume of consequences. Alex was a target simply because of who is parents are. We know people from Neverwhere can just cross over into the human world whenever they want to. Imagine a rogue Elf hellbent on hurting the Templars. Imagine how many people could have been collateral damage. Everyone Alex ever spoke to. Everyone he knew. Over 20 years. They could have been targets too. Multiply that with Jess and all her friends, teachers etc... They could have used anyone to lure her. Are we sure the Templars kept an eye on both of the kids for 20+ years? Everywhere they were and at all times?
Try as I might, I can't see their lies of omission as something innocuous.
Also not trying to condemn anyone who chooses to forgive them. I'm just trying to justify why I can't and why I'm so harsh on them.
