A kickstarter would get noticed real fast and the House of Mouse will send us a cease and desist.

We did do a fundraising thing and that's how tattoos and more body hair got from the bottom of our todo list to likely coming out in the next update.

But that also brought a lot of drama that made staff purge like 3 pages of discussion.

Honestly it's a combination of factors.

1. We're very story focused and sex is unlocked as you gain trust with the girls and meet their comfort levels. Some people just want to fap.

2. It's no secret that we're attempting to treat the relationships and the sex in a realistic manner. In Oni's game you can fuck in the student quad and have the entire student body watch all on the second day. We took that out and replaced it with romantic fluff. Some people just want to fap.

3. There's a lot of mechanics that you have to understand before you can turn your brain off. In our game, each girl has different sexual preferences. In other games, just focus on one action and watch the pleasure bar go up.

4. There's currently 3 other X-Men games competing with us and they all focus on Evo while we focus on comics. Evolution was more popular for a lot of people. While we have had over a dozen people tell us our game got them into comics, that doesn't pay the bills.

Something that most can probably figure out at a glance. Our art is a lot more complex where the other games retain simple cartoon styles. No one on the team excluding the artists is getting paid and the artists require thousands of dollars a month due to all the character angles, clothing, backgrounds, and basically everything that isn't UI.

I'll note that I'm not putting down other games or saying ours is superior. It's just different and isn't easy to get a quick fap out of unless you dedicate your time.

Though as Ron and I have said. If everyone on the Patreon paid minimum of $1 we'd be able to fund all 5 chapters within months.

We'll figure something out eventually.

I'll have to ask Ron about the logistics.

However please do not feel pressured into paying if you genuinely can't afford to maintain an active subscription.

I'm not mentioning the money situation to guilt anyone or to get pity for the project.

The only reason it's been mentioned is because of our promise to be transparent about development.

That however was before Secret Wars. Suddenly characters stopped aging, they stopped developing, marriages stopped happening or they got undone, they stopped having trauma that they needed time and reflection to work through.

Now the Status quo only changes once in a generation so things seem "fresh" and they can trick newer readers into thinking that they did naturally develop.

The whole launch of Carol becoming Captain Marvel, Jane Foster becoming a Thor, Kate Bishop taking over the West Avengers from Hawkeye, Venom's origin being rewritten once a decade.

For us, and the reason this rant isn't off topic, is that we will not ignore the characters developing and changing as people based on their experiences. Again I'm a psychologist and my job will be helping the writers understand the effects on the mind when you condense 30 years of comics into a narrative taking place over a period of 5 years.

Honestly we would LOVE to make a SFW game that was more of an X-Men life sim where we didn't need to make all the girls dateable so you could experience the comics more accurately.

Be a big brother to a 13 year old Kitty, help Colossus come to terms with his sister going from 6 to 16 in like 30 seconds. Teach Scott to not be a dumbass and to treat his relationship to Jean more seriously. Be a role model to the New Mutants.

There'd be some room for romance but it wouldn't be the entire roster and the best part is that we have dozens of people who'd absolutely love that...

We have over 4,000 people in our discord, and likely more people here on f95 that don't comment in this thread, and less than a hundred contribute financially. If we didn't have sex in our game, we'd have even less money contributed to the project.

Maybe it's a "you won't know that you love it until you try it, and then you'll want more of it" situation or if the SFW version came out first then I'd have a different opinion but to be completely honest The Null Hypothesis as it is right now is much more appealing to me personally.

This is because it's trying to do something that no other comic book porn game or any other porn game to my knowledge has ever done before; playing as a self insert-ish character who can experience and decide how to react throughout all the triumphs and struggles of the X-Men right alongside them in a comic-faithful world AND being able to romance most if not all of the female cast (emphasis on the romance part) with sexy times included. Also, the team's stated ambitions about the full scope of the game is enough to make me giddy with excitement all by itself.

So like you've said yourself, even if the Mouse wasn't an issue the problems of trying to go for a niche within a niche within a niche probably won't go over well considering the financial situation of the current game with one less niche as it is.

Interesting, I know about Buttholder's Ko-Fi and have contributed a few times but I didn't know Ron also has a Ko-Fi. Could you please link it since some casual google searching doesn't seem to turn up anything relevant? I'd love to contribute to his Ko-Fi as well as Buttholder's when I can do so. Especially since you've mentioned Patreon taking a massive cut of the money in fees, 70% by the end if I'm not mistaken.

Do wonder how much does Ko-Fi take though, could you please enlighten us Buttholder if Boots doesn't know?


And your 4 factors are part of the reason why I'm so hyped for this particular game compared to anything else right now, which is unfortunate too since people who are into what the game is doing like me are clearly in the minority of porn game players.

I'm personally not worrying about what may or may not happen in the future to the game and just try to chip in when I can; still hoping more people who are willing to contribute can eventually make the game at least financially stable without needing Ron to foot a significant portion of the bill.
