Indeed, shame on me. I've spend 156 hours on this one, good old day of Bioware. Before we had games like KOTOR and Jade Empire, now we have ME Andromeda and Anthem...
What has really been a huge negative in the gaming industry are all these small development studios being bought out by large, publicly traded companies. Some even buy them out, close them down, and just keep their intellectual property and rights (very sad when this happens).
You see, it takes 3 - 6 years to roll out a really good game. When you are dealing with a publicly traded company, investors aren't willing to wait that long for a payday! They want a steady stream of money constantly flowing into their coffers. They want to show an increase in profit each year. The gaming industry model doesn't fit in well here unless the company has lots of titles to keep the money flowing.
This means, short development cycles where it is impossible for devs to put out a good game. Look at all the former great studios putting out garbage in the past few years, Blizzard, EA, Bethesda anyone?
This also means lots of microtransactions and other devious money making schemes.
Tons of small development studios being bought out by large publicly traded companies has all but destroyed the gaming industry.
