As a modder myself, I have to wonder what all the hype is. As soon as you release a mod, it's out there and pretty much beyond your control. Whether it's behind a paywall or not. And also, that's kind of the point. You make a mod and want people to use it presumably. Then again I don't do Patreon nonsense either.
On top of that, a lot of studios have rather draconian "mod ownership" rules. At least on paper you lose ownership as soon as you make it in some cases. (Granted that would never stand in actual court but who's going to test it?)
I won't get into the game or studio, but a relatively popular B game studio decided to make their own mod platform. Before mods were only on Steam. On Steam the rules for modding are pretty good for their games. You own what you make yourself and not anything derived from the game. Reasonable. The studio's new modding platform however is straight from hell. They own everything and if you put it up there, they can steal it without so much as a thanks.
Anyway, back on topic, I'd still prefer a non Discord solution myself. Something that won't collapse at the whim of a company who trips over itself to ban everything.
