I mean, I think you confuse things a bit here. Yes, Trump was famous and arguably successful, at least on TV, but I'm pretty sure even back then most didn't see him as attractive or charismatic. (at least if you discount the attractiveness of his money and celebrity status, which of course is enough for a certain type of woman).Actually that's probably the most realistic part. Trump was pretty popular even before The Apprentice and pretty well regarded too.
Edit: Not a Trump fan FWIW, just stating the facts. He was on Oprah in the late 80s talking about a potential run for president, talked about picking her as VP for another potential run in 2000, did cameos in a bunch of movies and TV shows from the 80s on, etc.
He just wasn't as divisive back then as he is now, but he was already quite a target for jokes.
