Things you're tired of seeing in a game?

Oh, you want a rant? Here's something to laugh and nod along to...

  • Games that require grinding between progression events. Spending hours IRL doing repeat actions, 90% of the time holding the SKIP button to skim through fast. SMH so many games have this - or worse - unskippable, complicated, multi-action grinding events that are identical every time.

  • That shirt. You know the one. That grey shirt with black and sometimes orange graphic on it that exists in 70% of all games on this site... FFS - at minimum, try a texture edit, please.

  • Cloned love interests. I'm all for twins, triplets even, but when EVERY female has the same chin, nose, eye shape, and body type? It's a thing... Not for me.

  • Lack of diversity. I know many devs and players may be of lighter skin tone, perhaps fetishize watermelon breasts and beach ball behinds on women, but seriously... Mix up the physiques and ethnicities, please.

  • Short hair! Ugh... I know it's a bitch to deal with any hair that drapes below the chin, but I'd love to see someone who takes the time to render and animate characters with long hair. It's a classic look and very common in more than half the world: a long braid, locks of hair to her elbows, but not necessarily anime-style.

  • No pubes. Adult women, natural women have hair. Please give them some. I know many women shave, wax, or laser it off... But - as Cameron Diaz said, "I know you may think you'll be wearing the same style of shoes forever and the same style of jeans forever, but you won't. The idea that vaginas are preferable in a hairless state is a pretty recent phenomenon, and all fads change, people."

Sex scenes based around sex game progression, in so many cases it feels so off that a character gets a blowjob in a romantic scene when sex would have made far more sense, that dev doesn't want to "blow their load" early.

If the game is somewhat serious, I would prefer they just kiss if the dev is holding back.

I'm tired of those "slice of life" VNs. Some are very well written and realistic but still it's like watching a soap opera with sex scenes. I'd like to see more adventure or comedy or even romance, but at least let it be passionate, different or crazy. Not another endless conversation sitting on a couch or a breakfast table.

And let's spice those sex scenes up a bit. I'm tired of depicting the girl as a low hanging fruit. I like when the MC uses brains, charm, manipulation, tricks instead of just his dick.

PS. At some point every dev, including me ofc, has taken the 'easy' road because our job is already difficult and the deadlines are always too near. So, that means that sometimes, even myself look at my past works and shaking my head I'm thinking 'Shit. I could have written that scene so much better...'.
It's good if I learn from my mistakes, but it's even better if I learn from someone else's. (lol)

Games where the very first choice you make changes the game entirely and is essentially the only choice that matters. "Dom/sub" paths are particularly bad offenders here.
The axiom that "choices should matter" in a game only goes so far. When one choice so drastically changes the kind of content you have access to that you fracture your base into "people who tend to go down this path or the other," you are committing to working on two projects at once and forcing players to download heaps of content they have no intention of ever seeing.

It might make sense, on the surface, to cast a broad net and cater to two large and distinct potential supporters. But when it's done in this lazy manner, you're subjecting your fanbase to much longer development cycles and/or updates that provide nothing of value to half of the people playing the game.
The impact that the most important choices you make have should be constrained by a central theme. The nuance that your choices can add to your "alpha gigachad with a harem simulator" or "chastised sissy cuck RPG" will be much more interesting than what effectively amounts to a toggle switch for which game you get to play.

1) Emasculated Male MC: in every way possible.
2) Totally not Shota.
3) Monogamy is not an option: nor has a Tag despite being a core issue in sex because Romance is rainbows and lollipops.
4) Gigantic ballooned up clown car "Milfs".
5) 20 year old "Milfs".
6) No midriff, no belly: clown cannon shooting women's sides into orbit.

1. Cartoonish body proportions or physically impossible large penis.

2. Creeper/Excessively Perverted MC. Even MCs who are relatively normal on this front still have peeping/spying on women in the shower scenes that are unnecessary and creepy, at least a lot of devs include an option to not do this, but still idk why its even a thing in so many games.

3. MC with zero interesting or special qualities who magically gets all women, usually for no reason or a silly reason like "his cock was so big they all became mesmerized when they saw it". Or the classic "MC somehow has a magical power which corrupts every female's mind to fall for him". Its just lazy writing.

4. Ren'py MCs that all look exactly the same, even have the exact same haircut. Also ugly MCs, can't get behind someone who is disturbing looking, it ruins the mood of the game.

5. Tedious RPGM games. RPGM is pretty bad in general, its slow and usually very tedious to use, but often these games have no logical or gameplay reason for being RPGM or having you do repetitive tasks in RPGM that take forever. Why make a slice of life game RPGM?

6. Games that only revolve around corruption, mostly RPGM. RPGM could be used effectively for games that involve medieval combat, but almost every RPGM game seems to revolve around a psychopath MC trying to rape a bunch of women, or a female MC getting raped and corrupted by everyone. Almost always, these games have no good/pure route available either. Its disappointing because RPGM while not perfect, still has potential to be used for interesting medieval stories or other themes involving combat and ranking up in order to progress with the story.

7. Beta MC v Chad MC dichotomy. Most MCs seem to either be ridiculously perfect or ridiculously pathetic. A loser MC who gets beat up every time he leaves his house and is always groveling or a chad MC who everyone on earth worships and can do no wrong. Is it really so difficult to just write characters with more depth? And if the character is weak can they at least have the spine to stand up for themselves? They don't even have to win fights but they at least should have the self respect to not tolerate abuse willingly, or they should have character development and grow a spine gradually.

8. Characters who are unnaturally forgiving or nice to a fault. Its ok for a character's personality to be nice, but so many characters seem to have an unhuman level of forgiveness and passiveness about things that would realistically make anyone angry. For example, when a character finds out they are being cheated on they will either not get mad or forgive the person cheating on them after a couple lines of dialogue.

9. Games with grinding systems for no reason. If you are trying to rank up for some reason in the story I could see the logic (specifically combat) but many games force you to repeat the same actions hundreds of times just to unlock scenes. IMO this is usually because there is very little content and this merely exists to extend the runtime of the game, still it is annoying and unnecessary. Add more dialogue or if its not a story-focused game, then there should be no need for such a system anyway.

10. Puzzles in a game. They should at least be rare and optional, if you are invested in a story then having to spend a bunch of time solving a stupid puzzle can be frustrating.

11. "Romance" games that have one kissing scene or something minor but somehow count as "romance".

12. Every character besides MC and LIs being unnaturally rude or hostile. Seems like every side character in games always seems to just be a pervert trying to molest a female character or a douche who is looking for a fight for no reason.

13. Games that don't have an option to skip/speed through dialogue. This is especially a problem in RPGM, but having to sit through some dialogue that is tedious or that you've seen before (say, if you're replaying a game to go an alt route) is annoying.

14. Antiheroes or antagonists that are just perverted. Antiheroes can be a very cool change of pace from the vanilla characters but so often when a character is evil or disturbed in some way which gives them a questionable morality, they are just excessively perverted. No interesting depth, they're just immoral because they're obsessed with sex... A good example of a great antihero by contrast would be the protagonist of The Devil on G-String, Azai Kyousuke. Maou from the same game also makes an excellent antagonist who is more interesting than "I wanna get all the girls".

15. (Mostly with Japanese VNs) Annoying tsunderes that do nothing but degrade people and physically assault them.

-Guys, futas, traps, shotas, ...lets make it short: dicks

-Monster girls...i dont talk about cute nekos, wet slimes or fierce elves, i talk about the nightmare horrors with inhuman udders and fat asses

-Submission...playing a protagonist just to bow your head and kneel before others? Sorry, I'm a gamer and such behavior is reserved for the losers i didnt deemed worthy to kill, not for me

-Plots starting with "...coming back after X years" or "you move in with family X without having any reason to do so since you are an adult and dont fuck anyone in the house...yet" and similar most recycled plots

-Starting games with partner/relationship, especially if you cant dump them right away...i also dislike forced relationships outside of the "get them all" harem genre

-Noncon shit

-Not avoidable hetero content in female protagonist games

-Useless screens (whats the point in adding 1000 black screens for an useless extra click or keeping the current background after the text is gone for another click?)

-Minigames & QTE...i play VN to distract my mind and relax mostly at work, i dont want any stress factors there

-Lousy MTL, dialects, speech defects, abbreviations and slang...i'm not a native english speaker and its annoying to impossible to understand crippled english

-Patreon approved content...i dont need to play to become bored, i can just not play and be bored

-Limited grinding actions..."you can only read/train/talk once per day" just to stretch time and feed the illusion of content

-Getting teleportet back to the start/your room after solving any quests or talking to someone...especially if you have a whole fucking questline in one location and have to walk back every time

-Idiotic Protagonists

-Censored stuff including step-roommate crap

-Timejumps without even hinting what the protagonist or someone else did during that "X years later"

-No sexual content...then i can play chess.

...i'm sure i could think about some things, but this impromptu list almost wrote itself

Also, trans characters as afterthoughts.

I've seen too many instances where there is just a menu choice early on and a model change... and that is the only effect. You can tell the scene was always an anal scene and they just tossed some extra equipment on there.

Rarely are there any actual dialogues about it and in one of the few times they built a sex scene around it the dev misgendered the character halfway through.

My standards are so low for the smutty game genre that a trans character not getting misgendered is something I consider a win.

Also, thread tax: No, vaginas aren't infinitely deep that your MC with a third leg can penetrate his LI without it hurting. Hitting the cervix isn't that pleasurable, too[1].

Sexy times focusing on the penetration as the be-all end-all. Maybe I've gone soft, but I like it better when sex scenes have intimacy.

[1]Can't speak to experience on this from either part of the equation, lol

I don't know if this has been mentioned already, but developers attempting to sneak their foot fetish into a game that otherwise doesn't have it. I'm not going to buy for a single second that the image of the lady's feet being the foreground so often is mere coincidence.

What makes you think they are "sneaking" it? People simply enjoy feet in different levels, it doesn't has to be all or nothing you know...

Don't almost all games have at least the female characters run around barefoot (at least at home)? I think that's ok. Footjobs or foot licking are entirely different things of course, this should be avoidable. But then I think any non vanilla kink should be avoidable. I feel confused when people say anal sex is vanilla. Or footjobs. They are certainly not.

Maybe I've gone soft, but I like it better when sex scenes have intimacy.
You can tell that most games are written for men by men. I think VN land could benefit from writers who know how to actually write romance, instead of just "sex".
But I guess animating intimate moments, tender moments, requires too many resources, so the (short) animations and scenes mostly focus on the penetration and sex. Little else. I am already happy when at least some kissing is involved.

actually I liked to see update game where you create your character right sex/ everything and given a house is modifier. But adventure is given. Story would given is that DM is chooses what happens to you everyday I have yet see game like this in HTML.
House could could shack, to mansion, village house, or house near sea shore?

Point being the DM[Developer] could decide throw bone decision, like well you left your family when your father felt a quest teach you lesson for egging on him for so...quests are easy or farms are easy, or fishing is easy.
"So your father decided with elder to put you task to trial for 3 years without help."
Depending on sex of character? I kind wonder how that work out. Its something like this if there someone interested?
Lot things can happen in three years? family might try to hinder success?
(not like strive) I was thinking about it clearly no. Something new.

Incest I don't really give rats ass about, I don't like bestiality like hog-men, vore and that sort stuff, Incest been around for long time if your offended by it understand its been around before the bible and written word so you belief incest is gross is like your misguided ideology we all cousins on this green earth. Other thing twins are miracle of life, Just I feel they don't really have personality differences, make me feel weird starring at them in 3d or picture games I found hard going some how even boy twins were hard too look at I known twins in my time. Twins are normally very cool to know. In these games twins make appear bad reflection to ones I know.

Even goats twins tend act differently. Bigger twin acts protective for smaller twin. Even if boy reared with another boy would protect weaker one none of that goes with human raised child is very suspicious? Some stories have less childhood friends and less of mockery of life.

People want to sterilize human life without joys of pregnancy, I guess that propaganda now. To create life and have joys of such thing is wrong to college educated. Ask a real cow to stop giving birth and cow will say no. Cow is giver life and take that away from such animal who gave us food, milk and fertile soils is truly cruel human. People who do such a thing are members of anti life cult.

Giant boob and giant penis world is living cartoon world. Horse and Minotaur cocks aside I going say they should stay in cartoon world for bit jest. Giant boobs cause back strain if it was reality? seems most developers ever did research most women they ever knew never told the truth that bras in question made their boobs appear smaller.

What I don't get is why is there a quiz or fetish check? Currently I saw 4 games like this and not many after that. I like see more games like this.

Stupidity:
I don't mean the character being stupid I mean the author showing his stupidity in their writing because they have no understanding of how shit works. I'm sure if I start listing off authors or games I'll just get in trouble for it on here.
It isn't that hard to pick up a book and learn something or use the internet. There are forums on most topics were you can often find experts in a field who can answer a question. There is open course ware from colleges like MIT.
There is no fucking excuse for the level of ignorance I see displayed in games.

Mixed content:
Authors that try to please everyone or make more money at the expense of a decent story.
But they make it avoidable or able to be turned off. Yea, right.
You can always tell by the character dialog that there is this other side or missing aspect of the game.
I don't mean the prompts that lead you into that section of the game. I am talking about how the character acts.
Example: You have a male character or female character who has the alternate path. Sure you remove the alternate path. But they never change the dialog leading up to the path potential. The characters behavior and mannerism are left the same.
So there has never ever once been a game like this I couldn't tell the content was missing. What you end up with is a character like a bisexual male attempting to play straight or some crap. Or worse it feels like a gay author tried to write a book from the perspective of a strait MC. It just glaringly stands out.

There are enough parables and sayings out there that it is a fools errand to try and please everyone. You make yourself out to be that much more of a fool thinking you can.

Virgin authors:
The issues is in experienced authors both sexually and relationship wise.
You have a lot of authors who are just that virgins. It's easy as hell to tell when their entire understanding is basically shit pushed by the porn industry. So we have virgins writing about sex. We have guys writing about harems who never once had a date with multiple women or never had multiple women dating him or in a relationship at the same time.

Failing to acknowledge human behavior:
Authors often ignore human behavior or have little or no understanding of it.
If you ever look at blackmail used in games you can almost always find where the author ignores what the target of the blackmail could actually do and turn the tables. That's just one example. You can find the issue when it comes to all sorts of other stuff. You know all those scenes were you are thinking shit, "like no one would act that way", "Yea, right.", ...
I generally chalk this up to authors that have little or no social experience. You know the basement dwellers trying to right about a life they imagine and will never achieve because they will still be in mom and pops basement 20 years from now.

If most adult game developers followed the advice write about what you know most the games would come to a stop.
They do need to make a change and stop using porn as their guide to life and sex. They need to find better sources.
You might be thinking that well I can't just go ask someone shit like that I don't want people knowing my lack of experience.
Get the fuck over yourself. Suck it up. Everyone has to learn some how. If you can't do that go on a forum with a different identity. Do research under a different account.

Plot holes from hell:
For fuck sake think about what you are writing about and how it fits together and the implication of your writing choice.
Start with world building:
Where is it. What is society like. How do things fit together. What resources are they going to have and not. How will those issues affect the society. Is it even possible for this society to exist at all or for more than a very short time given the choices I made. If not remove the stuff that causes the conflict.

Character development. What type of personality are they what made them that way. If their is to be a change it has to be something strong that causes it. It can be a number of things over a long period or it could be one large incident or several large incidents. Otherwise people don't generally change. People change in two manors for the most part incremental or because something showed them in one large event what they were doing wasn't right.
Then family, friends and all the other stuff.
It needs to tie together.

Plot development. Story board. If you don't know what that is look it up. Remember those characters you created above. They should behave the way they would and not suddenly go against what you previously presented. Don't describe a character as being super smart if you aren't going to have them act that way in the story. Don't present them as being the best at something if the audience can easily discern what they come the hell up with is no better than what they can come up with to solve a problem.
1. Don't write above your own level of understanding.
2. Or write above the level of understanding of your source. If you don't fully understand the source refer to 1.
It's better to not write about something than write about it poorly.

Think of your primary story start and end. Then what underlying stories get you from the start to the end. Then maybe work on side stories. But always always finish the primary first. If a secondary or side story means making the primary story change then it doesn't belong in the story. Don't add it. Any secondary or side story should be able to be told without changing the primary story.

Assets are the least of my concern:
I good story / game can use shit assets and still be fun and entertaining. Authors for thousands of year wrote lots of great stories with out any CG or other content.
In truth if your story and game play are worth a shit a video game could get away with stick figures or even shapes instead of people. Granted that won't appease the fappers(people who just click through a game to get to sex seen to beat off).

Logically if you think about it the fappers are the last group you should try to appease. These people are basically appeased by a slide show. So the story/game play isn't directed at them. So fuck them. Just write a good story and game. Then add the artwork in.

In case you think I am wrong about the slide show. Take a linear visual novel. All it has is text over an image. Instead of separating them put the text on the image and then display the images in order. All you need is slide show software then.
How well they like your game pretty much comes down to two things how many clicks it takes them to get from content to content and the appearance of the content. So even if you appeal to some of them with one art style others might not like it.
