Law School by MisterMaya
This has turned out to be a bit of a gem, and I’m happy to induct it into my top ten list now I’ve played the second episode – there’s enough content for me to say I’m happy with what I’ve seen so far and I’m very optimistic for what’s still to come. I enjoyed The Entrepreneur, but already here the level of storytelling and gameplay feels improved, and while the graphics were already great in The Entrepreneur, again they just feel that little bit better here.
Starting with the girls then, there are a couple of good-looking ones here and that’s it… Everyone else is better than just good-looking. There are some real stunners here, and I really like that there are several girls whose personalities and stories I like too, so there’s a fantastic combination. Seriously, this might be my favourite game just in terms of the LIs overall, but that’s one it probably
is a little early to be saying.
The sex scenes are not too frequent, at least at the moment, but they have generally been okay, if maybe a little short. Some of the non-lewds have been the best though, with some real tension and feeling shown between the characters.
There’s some good humour in the writing, and I love that there are a couple of different characters providing the main comic relief. One is female, and it feels quite refreshing, as she is the MC’s best friend, and it’s a role we so often see played by another male. Although some of the subject matter is serious, the game is clearly a light-hearted one, and there are several times where you get exaggerated actions which raise a smile. Things like characters being pushed away to shut them up and you literally see them fall out of view off the edge of the screen.
Talking of being serious though, I like how (so far at least) this game has managed to give us a compelling bunch of characters and a simple but engaging storyline without needing to follow the tired tropes that so many other games like this one revert to – drugs, prostitution, rape, corrupt police, friends with murderous histories, etc.
One last thing that I quite like here as something a little different, is when someone is recapping events that happened previously. Some stuff will happen involving the MC, so you see it all, but later he will tell a friend who wasn’t there. Usually, you might get a transition screen and a line of narrative that says “ten minutes later” or something, to show that the story has been told. Here, you do get a transition screen, but it just holds the frame and drops in three images – frames from those previous events – to show what MC is recapping. I liked this, I think it worked nicely, and just felt a little different.
Overall, I’ve really enjoyed this game so far, and I can’t wait to continue it. I’m pretty comfortable for the moment, but soon I’m going to have to go back and start creating additional saves as I’m going to want a path for each of the available LIs. At the moment though, I feel there hasn’t been a cut-off point, so although there have been a couple of choices that mean you miss some content with one LI or another, I don’t think there’s anything yet that would close off a path, or be absolutely vital in order to get onto a particular path.
