Aw crap! I downloaded and extracted the "update only" files and the game seems to have forgotten my preferences and wiped my saves...

No, the alternative solution is to apply the update properly. But if you are not sure how to do it, then yes the answer is always just download the full game.

I downloaded the full update and says the file already exists in my system from 2 weeks ago. Is there an update or is this a false alarm?
