So... played the update. Its drifty style alright. Though this time a lot of more goofy stuff in it...
But i dont know, iam having a hard time getting into this game of his.
Leap of Faith had this instant connection thing going on between the characters and it felt kinda easy to relate.
U4ia misses this completley. All the characters are a bunch of strangers to each other, more or less. So yeah, some know each other, but nothing is really shown about it. So... a bunch of strangers meeting, and out of nowhere having big parties in just a couple of days with staying overnight and whatnot. It feels very weird. And at this point we just know so little about the characters it gets annoying. And the whole "overshadowing" plot feels way to huge with the drug thing and institute and whatnot to not get it going at this point. I mean, there is nothing rteally happening in that regard. Why even make up this story in the first place? Leap of faith didnt had such a story going and worked perfectly fine as a story of a guy who is starting his life again and finding love for a girl which was struggleing with life too (not just CeCe but more or less all the girls in the game)
I get the feeling Drifty is trying to "overachieve" here and failing at it. Its just too much and nothing is working out so far. At this rate the game needs about 20 episodes... which will not happen. It will be bigger than leap of faith yeah, but it already feels like it will not be enough to deal with everything in a porper way.
First of all, there are too many girls. And pretty much all of them are Love-Interest for the logn run, even if they dont start as such. "bla blah iam not interest in a relationship" every second girl said that, but its clear that its heading that way anyways if you pick the right choices.
Than you have to make critical choices very early on and those rule out any chance to get with the girl (or multiple girls with one choice) later on. I dont like harem games at all, but at least give me a chance to get to know each character in the game BEFORE she is ruled out as a Love Interest just because i go through the left door instead of the right one so to speak. Leap of faith stayed open for everyone until the middle of the game where you have to really make a curcial choice late in episode 4 more than halfway through the game, but there you already had a connection with every one and could really "pick". Yeah you can "ditch" girls early on in LoF, but its your choice and doesnt rule out others. In u4ia you have to make choices very early on and those are often of the kind "if you pick this, you can go for this girl but not the other" Those choices shouldnt be in the game THAT early on without even knowing the girls names at that point. Thats totally annoying too. So you make quicksaves all the time and rolling back more than actually playing the game. Hard to enjoy it like that.
And the most annoying part to me are the free roams... dont know why drifty decided to add them, but more importantly, why making them so... confusing and totally pointless? The big palace-mansion in this update was just.... way too much... to find all the bedrooms and such was very annoying and unnecessary. I get the point of free roams, the purpose is to make the game more "alive" but like this i just want to quit the game... at least add a quicktravel "map" or something like that. DPC learned that too later on in the big free roams of being a dik... cause otherwise its not bareable. The biggest problem with the free roams in this game apart of being confusing is, they are pointless. There is nothing really to do or to see. You could use such free roams to spread information about the characters too you know? Like make the MC snoop around their stuff or whatever, or show how they a living in their rooms, or whatever. But there is just NOTHING to do or to see in the big ass free roams searching for the right door to click on. Why adding them in the first place if you dont know what to do with them? The beach is perfect example for that too... instead of adding this freeoram he could add all characters in just one render and make them clickable one after another to go through the scenes with them. There was really no point at all for that beach free roam. The same goes for the big mansion. Especially cause its not even a personal space of a character where you might find something out about them.
There are just too many game and story design choices made by drifty for this game that are plain wrong and dont work out at all compared to leap of faith.
Well, at least he delivers in his strongest talent i think... writing entertaining dialogues. Its always fun to read the dialgoues between the characters and the banter, little jokes and so on. But again, after a while they feel strange cause i always think to myself "they talk to each other like they know each other their whole life but just met one day ago" The real strange thing about that is... the characters that actually KNOW each other dont act that "familiar" with each other all. Very weird... Like Jacky comes off like a total stranger most of the time while with Lars its like the two guys where best friends all their life. Its just weird. The whole feeling of the game is weird to me, especially compared to Leap of faith.
Dont know... i think Drifty wanted to achieve too much with this game at once and ended up achieving nothing because of that. Sure its fun to read... but all the relationships between the chracters just dont work, cause everything feels very unnatural and totally weird. Its like the movie "Hangover" but with people who actually dont know each other... which just doesnt work to me.
*edit* and yeah, the free rorams kill absolutley every desire to make mulitple playthroughs, which are much needed if you want so see more than 2 or 3 girls though.... drifty has to improve that, maybe rework some stuff.
