It is against Steam policy for a developer to release a paid game on Steam and then offer it for free on another platform. This is a violation of the "release parity" rule in the Steam Distribution Agreement, which can lead to the developer's game being removed from the platform.
Here are the key factors regarding Steam's policy on free releases:
  • Price and release parity: The distribution agreement includes a "release parity" clause, which generally requires games and updates to be released on Steam at the same time and price as on other platforms. Offering a game for free on another storefront (like the Epic Games Store or a standalone site) while it is for sale on Steam is a direct breach of this agreement.
  • Price discrepancy enforcement: Steam players who notice a developer selling a game on Steam while offering it for free elsewhere can report the developer. This can result in the game being delisted from the Steam store.
  • Promoting other stores: Developers are also forbidden from promoting non-Steam versions of their games in communications on the Steam store or community hubs.
  • Past incidents: The consequences of violating these rules have been seen in the past. For example, in 2025, the game Bioprototype was removed from Steam after its publisher violated Steam's rules, forcing the developers to release it for free for a limited time as an apology.
You're 100% wrong, I just showed you 2 developers (that is from the private developer forum on F95) that have their game on Steam paid, and both offer FREE public versions of the same game on Patreon.

The price parity is ONLY when Steam keys are involved....
:KEK: :KEK: :KEK:

Edit: You guys might want to check the first post.
Yes, I know, that doesn't matter just trying to show this guy is wrong about developers can release a public version still on Patreon while have the game paid for on Steam. And any who say they can't is a flat out lie.

It's not a very good game anyway

Oh you were in there? Honestly I didn't read that far back. Just saw those bickering back and forth tbh.
And you're are correct yeah. The only thing they can't do is have another store price it lower. But they can if they want give it away for free.

They can price it lower if "steam" keys are not involved with the purcahse which is one example they gave. Or Steam is "involved" with the purchase but the only way they can be involved is with Steam keys.

I buy games all the time on Itch that are cheaper than Steam and sometimes vice versa :ROFLMAO:

you're right but at the same time he's not wrong either

steam has always required exclusivity. if you were selling your game there one of the main steam pricing policies was that steam had to be store with lowest price to avoid undercutting steam’s store. you couldn't do it by selling your game on steam and distributing it for free on patreon or another platform

this policy was changed in 2023. many just remember it and think it's still there

Yeah, Itch, Steam, can't really count on them now. At least GOG seems to be doing something.

Now the backlash with the credit card on file for people in the UK, I'm just waiting for the attacks now against Steam with a lot more users now having credit cards tied to their accounts (it is now the ONLY way to verify your age). I have a feeling a lot more Steam accounts are going to be compromised.

never said a public verision I said a free verison which I think the guy was asking bout since he hasnt corrected me. PS that record timing figured bout another 12 hours before it leaked.

Btw I regard public release as free release on patreon. which some devs do that.

I know of a dev who explicitly directly asked valve if they could release a free version and was told no. I have no reason to believe they were lying - it's possible that it was a misunderstanding about steam keys (on either end of that discussion), but there was no indication it was.
I also, like you, know of games that are on steam and do release free versions.

My guess is if you just do it, you most likely won't run into issues. If you ask them, steam's legal team may tell you no.
Of course, either way, if Steam just decides to fuck you, you have no real effective recourse, because of the power imbalance. The same way all those devs who're owed money by itch are kinda fucked.

But yeah, I just hope GOG can rally as an alternative, with alternative payment options.

Enjoyed the last game, but haven't gotten around to playing this one yet. Tbh I'm not sure if it's worth it after reading a bunch of reviews. Are the free-roam sections as bad reviews describe or have they improved? Do stats affect the story or is more of a blocking out choice thing? Is the story interesting?
