The creator keeps responding to comments on their itch.o that its being worked on and that they're having money issues for 2 years now. Wouldn't these money and skeptical problems be solved by actually posting updates to their patreon and getting a decent following?
Not if the money that's coming in is even less than the day job. Say the dev went all in to develop fulltime and after half a year of explosive growth, makes like 2k a month. That might
still be even less than what they're making now, and that's not counting the 5 months in between of even less income.
Say you want to develop a game part time while still working your day job, right? Well how many hours are you, personally, willing to put in every week? How many dollars an hour would the small monthly income from Patreon amount to, if you were to average it out. Does it make more sense financially to do this than get an actual part time job?
I feel like too many people fail to understand that indie game development, for the most part is unprofitable compared to a conventional job. Like bro, minimum wage generally pays better than trying to make it big with adult game development. Most people don't have the skills, let alone time, to build a large enough following where they could completely replace working a full time job. Say you get $10 hr, 40 hours a week, 4 weeks a month. That's $1,600 before tax deductions. With Patreon, even if you get $1,600 per month, you lose a cut of that to Patreon itself.
