The trouble with this is, not everyone wants releases on the same schedule and not everyone's gonna be willing to take the dev's word that "trust me, each chapter will be worth $5". Some people who are happy to pay $2/month would not want to pay $20 in a lump sum even if it winds up being less. Patreon lets everyone set their own engagment level. And you can always just end your support if you don't feel progress is fast enough. The site makes it very clear that your sub doesn't entitle you to anything.
The game is for free, no need to pay for it. So you can't put a value on it. You pay to support the developers. And if you pay, you get to vote for girl of the next update, get your own avatar and such...

So far, the next update is like this:
I wonder what posing means. Art is on 87%, but if posing means that we get new art after the posing is finished, we are only at 70% before the game finished.

I wouldn't really mind the rest, coding and debugging takes time too of course, but I would suggest that only art has a fixed duration time, that can't really be speed up much.

Art is the drawing and coloring, posing means telling Ren'Py where to put them on the screen, and how to display them.

You also have to realize that sometimes things get added. Those numbers are higher than they were a month or two ago. About 70 new things were added since the last time I added it all up.

The update is currently at 84% overall.

Yeh I thought posing, was the idea of some person doing some posture, you guys drawing it, and then it need to colored and such. And that was why new items got added to art.

Thanks for the information. 84% sound better, than 70%.

It's also that, in a way. All those little animations with characters' hands, mouths and eyes you see during dialogues are part of the posing tasks. Most of times is just a matter of picking the right expressions from the existing bunch, although getting the right one can be challenging: sometimes the first choice don't quite fit with the tone and changes are needed, this increasing the posing tasks count, and sometimes Pistachio feels that some line needs a particular expression that has never been drawn before so Chestnut needs to draw those elements in this new, particular way.

Thank you for the info, that makes a lot of sense.

Can anyone share a savefile up until 0.5 (so without 0.6/unfinished 0.6)?
Reset my computer and completely forgot I had things in my AppData folder, since then it has been a while...
Savefile for 0.6 is fine too btw just in case I do not get a 0.5 one :)

Weekly report 176
Hi, everybody.
Happy Friday! Here's a summary of what Chestnut and I have been doing since our last report:

Chestnut:
She worked primarily on earlier cutscenes, and also drew two new artworks of Gomira in combat that we hadn't planned on earlier but which on playing the content we had decided we needed them; every time she tests the game, Chestnut makes a list of improvements to be done after she has finished the originally planned art, but in this case, she needed something not too spoilery for the video, so she chose an item from that list. She recorded one of those artworks, and I will edit and export it tonight to be posted tomorrow. She started drawing the base art for 0.7's first sex scene.

Pistachio:
I edited a few dialogues, rewrote a scene, and posed everything I had prepared. In the case of one of the dialogues, though, I think the pacing is a bit off, but I only noticed that after the posing was done, and I will likely end up editing and possibly rewriting it. After seeing I had to redo a a whole conversation, I decided I needed to take a break from the text and the posing, so yesterday I did nothing except looking for sound effects and preparing and adding them to the game.

Next week's plan:
Chestnut has more work-in-progress cutscenes to conclude, and she will also finish the base art for the first sex scene.
I want to code in some of the completed art and do more editing and posing.

That's all.
Have a great great weekend.
Cheers

Honestly Patreon & Early Access on Steam are so heavily abused, a better system is needed... Both platforms tend to result in a whole hell of a lot of devs releasing a cool alpha prototype that they worked their ass off on, but then they start getting money and magically lose motivation to develop at the same pace and quality they were operating on to create the initial release.

Patreon in particular is such a bad system... it incentivizes devs to drag out game production if you think about it. Imagine if you hired a contractor to redo your kitchen, and instead of saying I will pay you $30k for the job, you said "I will pay you $1,000 per day of work" ... can you imagine what would happen? Yeah they would take fucking forever to finish the job. It's human nature.

To be clear I am not saying that is necessarily the case with this dev - I am not familiar enough with this particular game and dev to suggest that, but it is very clearly what has happened with a lot of these games.

I think a far better system would be something like, determine a fair price for the WHOLE GAME when complete, say $50 or $100 or whatever. Then split that up into X number of releases. Suppose we said the final game price was $50, and the number of releases will be 10. Develop a roadmap showing what will come in each chunk. Then as each version is released, the dev gets a payment for that release (in this case $5 per customer.) But of course Patreon and similar systems are not set up that way, because just like the devs, they just make more money the longer the process drags out because they are getting a % cut.
I agree tbh, but this game is well made and the devs are decent people so talking patreon turns into massive arguments.

It's a difficult concept to talk about because people get heavily defensive over anything Patreon, it's a touchy subject. The general defenses are that you're not paying for a product, you're supporting an artist like patron kings of old (lmao), and that you have the choice to not support and yada yada yada. I used to agree with that viewpoint for the longest time but seeing as there is a nigh uncountable amount of unfinished and never-to-be-finished projects chugging along for years, the Patreon model has seemingly proven that it is inherently flawed at least for software solutions in its incentivization of never finishing your promised project.

Scope creep, development hell and such are punished in a normal release. You lose money every second you're spending making something after all. Patreon reverses all that once you reach a certain level of sustainable income. You have literal 0 incentive to finish a game. And I doubt Patreon will ever change with how popular it has proven.

Why would you pay for something you aren't guaranteed you are getting?
Are we still complaining about the long update? You pay because you want to support the authors, and they make this game because they like to make it, as a thank you to all the games they already played.

And if you support them, you get your name added, you get to make an avatar, and you get to join polls for which girl the next update should be. And unfortunately you also got the select that the next update be a lot bigger, which of course takes a lot longer.

And fi you don't have the money or don't want to, then don't support them. Nobody is forcing you. And you still get to play the game when the next update comes out. Not happy about it, good bye...

I can't believe how good the art for this game is. I wish I Chestnut had other socials where I could look at her other work. But I guess she doesn't want to connect her actual identity to this game, hence the pseudonym.
