I can't say about previous updates, I don't think there were really 3 month updates in the past. Unfortunately you cannot see the update history,or at least I don't know where you can see that...

The first two updates came out rather quickly, as they were significantly shorter and used some artworks that were already made before the first release. After 0.3, though, updates just got bigger and bigger, and this meant longer dev times.
A brief recap of updates:
0.1 - 2020-May-1 - intro and rabbit quest
0.2 - 2020-Jun-28 (2 months) - entering the city (sheep disguise quest + prison)
0.3 - 2020-Sep-21 (2.6 months) - Holly's first quest (Waldo and Celestina) + Serena's reward for completing main quest 1
0.4 - 2021-Feb-13 (4.8 months) - first 'character focused' update (Myrtle)
0.5 - 2021-Sep-25 (7.3 months) - main story (Lana and Simmone)
0.6 - 2022-Jul-30 (10 months) - Rose's story
0.7 - 2024-Dec-10 (28 months mainly due to the newborn) - Gomira's story

And now Holly's Story, which unlike some of the others had the first quest already in place, but is still estimated to take 16 months.
Though bear in mind these devs are genuinely awful at predicting completion times, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were longer.
I think the insinuation that it's literally not possible for them to use all the money they're getting to hire someone to help out with any aspect of their game is what dries up a lot of the good will. Even if you buy the idea that no other artist could ever replicate or help without some kind of clash (RIP any game dev teams that ever had more than 1 artist I guess), there's enough other aspects that could use the help.
Yes, the game is free, everyone donating on the Patreon is doing so of their own choice, but that doesn't mean their approach isn't questionable.
