Yes, version control works and im sure they are using that too, a project of that size without version control is impossible. But thats not the problem. Updating such a big project by 3 versions (19 to 22) probably was an act in itself. Its also something that theyll have to do eventually if they want to benefit from newer version features. So there isnt really a perfect point in time to go through this shit, but they have to, they are now and all we can do is wait it out.
In the end itll be done when its done, and itll be beneficial for them and us.

No, there's not. But I wouldn't say that right before a release is a good time to decide to do the update. Someone made the decision to do that, right? Again, no experience with Unreal, but the way I would tackle it is to make a separate branch to perform the update on. Then if everything there is right, and all the tests pass, then you merge that with your main develop branch. If things don't work out on your update branch, you can postpone the update and plan it in a different sprint. Perhaps even a sprint dedicated to the update if that's what's necessary.

Actually the best time to do an engine update is during the release of a build. If you are smart, then phase it in; have a test branch and the main dev branch. While the main dev branch releases the update, the test branch is testing to see how their game works in the new version, and starts fixing those issues, while the main branch addresses their recent build and bugfixes that. Then once the release is all done, then you transfer the main development branch into the new engine, and as you will have fixed the bugs in the test version, you'll know what areas will have to be fixed for the main development branch.

It appears however they were not smart and didn't have a test version branch, and instead put the main branch into the new engine build, without phasing it in. And as expected, shit hit the fan.

Version control isn't the easiest thing to setup or maintain. And, when you are a small team, some prefer to not bother with it until their team size gets bigger. It is possible that they don't have version control, and thus did not think to backup the game project before doing the engine update and thus unable to go back to a previous build to make the release happen. That is my guess why they haven't reverted the project version back to a stable one. When I stated that you cannot reverse the project, I meant within UE4's game development program. If you have a backup elsewhere, then you can revert the project version, otherwise you are hooped.

So far the graphics are good, the movements ans animations are smooth but there is nothing to do other than talking to each NPCs in order to trigger sex scenes...

Because one person asks/requests a feature for a certain fetish you fear that the game will become something featuring fetishes that (I assume) you don't like? And I guess aside from the squirting (which is relatively tame a fetish IMO) and humongous tits, all the other things are already to a certain extent in the game. And I don't think humongous tits will ever make it into the game, because I believe Steve has said on multiple occasions that he likes the breasts as they are now.

It was so obvious that the game will have either feral beast NPCs (good luck with Patreon) or anthros. Wild Life means nature, survival and both on a planet where humans crashed with their ship. It's to be expected that you might see stuff you can't find on earth. X3

Not interested in pregnancy, but I do occasionally like a bit of cum-belly expansion, if the deformation looks good (bit of a wildcard for this one). I would however love some bigger bulges (it is generally difficult to notice the bulging with the minotaur unless really up close; the effect is too subtle) and backspurting (when orgasming inside an orifice too full of cum, the rest explodes backwards out the orifice and onto the cock).

Also never been one for oversized tits; I find that when the circumference of a tit is larger than the female's head, it is TOO big.

Anything that features bestiality could be considered criminal and so the government could ban the game if it had it in it. Other games can get away with bestiality, because they aren't super mainstream and can hide from the government... but wild life has gotten so big now, that hiding isn't likely. So I highly doubt you will see it in the game.

You can "fudge" the bestiality laws by having furries (canines/felines), scalies(lizards/dragonkin), and minotaurs/goatmen (though strangely enough, you can't have centaurs for "reasons"; I don't consider a minotaur/goatman a furry, but that is just my own way to distinguish races... others may disagree). I don't think it is because of "consent"... as well monsters can only give consent because the programmer makes them consent... but are they consenting because they want to or they have no choice in the matter. If they have no choice, is it really consent? But that is a philosophical discussion for another day and another thread.

Still, I carefully considered your reply and I guess you are right to a certain extend. What concerns me is that once there is a game (if there ever is), I don't have control about how characters look, or maybe even what they do. So every fetish (I personally don't have any) is potentially annoying. I would certainly not play a game where a wild tentacle monster suddenly appears and rapes my main character
But at this stage I am bound to agree with you: Nothing is forced at you, the freedom is there to try the things or not, which is fine.

Let me finish by saying that I hope for a final product to convey emotions. Thats what I really love about "Being a DIK" for instance. If they manage that with a nice storyline and the erotic components, then this absolutely is a winner.

I'm pretty much 100% certain that you will be able to change the way your character looks once the game is actually a game. They wouldn't be putting in time and resources to create a character customization system just to throw it away later.

The level of customization that there is now is probably all we are going to get. But that isnt bad, its already a lot more than countless other games.

The only thing I would like to see in the character customization that's not in the game yet is the ability to change clothes to the ones from a different NPC. Right now each character has their own set of clothes, and I prefer to have one global pool if possible. But that hopefully won't be an issue when there's gameplay, and you can maybe acquire clothing from the game world.

Considering that the animations are made specifically for a particular male actor and one of two female actors, that's very unlikely. The way the female body interacts (vagina and anus most notably) with the penis is manually done. Either they'd have to introduce a dynamic system to replace that, or say fuck it and allow clipping.
