Back at the time, you could become a patreon (see link in the first page), right now I don't think there is anything more to do about it. The developer has quite clearly given up.

would it be possible for another developer to pick up the project? i guess we would need lsi3D's permission first?

The DEV abandoned the game there is no requesting it's dead. They would have to get permission from the DEV to be able to get the assets and permission to continue their work.

The game is ALMOST done and he just slammed the door in our faces.
