I just remembered another good use for textures. In the second episode of Broken Hearts Club, I built a scene where one of the characters, Shane, was sleeping and about to have a really good dream. In order to have the scene look realistic, I had to have a blanket over her that was contoured. (On a side and unrelated note, putting characters in bed sleeping without a blanket is generally laziness, and very unrealistic to boot). To get the contours, the easiest thing to do was use a primitive plane, apply a texture to it, then drop it on top of the sleeping character in the bed using dForce. While I suppose it could have been done with an existing blanket asset, blankets aren't often dForce enabled, so it may or may not have worked. The ability to grab and apply a texture let me create a realistic scene that also had the benefit of rendering faster (plane primitives are lot less complex than many other surfaces), and I definitely needed that in the scene because the lighting was very low, and there were multiple ambient light sources -- all of which contribute to slow render scenes.

great thinking on using a plane, shall remember that.

I wanted hills for the background and someone suggested using dformer with a plane, which is what I did with a ground plane found in Room Creator Exteriors. Would never have thought of it working for a blanket.

I didn't use a plane from any tool ... just the simple plane primitive that is native to Daz3D. Then I applied a cotton fabric texture to it. Easy peasy.

oh yeah, keep forgetting about the native primitives, not something I use much, learned a lot about daz but still feel I got so much to learn.

I just used the ground plane as it had a grass texture, which is what I needed.

Well given native primitives are the ultimate in "free stuff" in the spirit of this thread, they apply.

Here is a group of tutorials on but the principles can be used just as well on primitives. It has also been added to the Tutorials section in the OP. The very first tutorial (of 81 tutorials in the thread) is how to create and drape a blanket over an object. That's what I used.

Thanks! I have seen the Tavern Wench, but had no idea it came with hair!
Also how awesome is that Urbosa model-I have zero use for it or the hair, but want it anyways, LOL!
The Tavern Wench rang a bell but I forgot why. She (along with a bunch of other figures) are in the Figures section of the OP. I claim amnesia since I put that in there a year ago. I'm sure if you look at some of the others, you may be able to get clothes, hair, etc. along with them as well.

Daz 3D is offering up two dudes, David 5 (who has an extremely punchable face IMHO) and Hiro 5 (who oddly looks completely anime in every example except the center photo-kind of like different iterations of Final Fantasy characters through the years, lol )

This is a bit tangential, but The Smithsonian is releasing 2.8 million images and 3D files for free under the always welcome Creative Commons CC0 license

There aren't actually a lot of 3D files I can find so far, but they seem to be in OBJ format. The weird thing is I was idly looking for a 3D egg carton the other day...and there is one in this collection.

Personally I'm more interested in the free 2D stuff-always great to have artwork and other 2D images to add some life and detail to 3D renderings.

MCI Games sent me a private message about a site they have that has some free CGI assets. It's a really small selection, but hey, the price is right!

While the selection is small, there are some cool things in here like a couple of different pillows, fences, bridges, and a fountain which could be cobbled together to make a small garden or park scene. I would so love to see a park that is different from the Daz 3D one that everyone and my neighbor's dog is using at the moment. These assets may be a way to build a simple alternative. Hey, I used a very cheap I found to make a fairly decent pier conversation scene in the early morning hours on Brighton Beach in Broken Hearts Club.

You can certainly say that twice and mean it. If I see the "Girls just Wanna Have Funds" poster one more time, I think I will puke.

Have you seen ? Totally open license, wide range of photos. I created a whole set of fake posters from some of them for a project.

By the way it's time over at Daz3D and the purchase of a "Newly Mad" item (between $9 and $22) will score you a free Victoria model (5, 6, 7, or 8) for FREE, as well as the opportunity to buy a PC+ item for $2.20. I was able to score a beach location, Victoria 8 and the for a bit over $12 out the door (using my $6 PC coupon). It's not free, but it darn cheap, and Victoria 8 did end up being free.

EDIT: As soon as I posted this, by 11:30 PST the deal disappeared and the new March Madness offers are more March Meh-ness. I'll post if anything juicy comes up again.

Just a tip on this sale. I saw a bunch of things I wanted and put them in my cart at the discounted prices. My payment didn't go through, but I left them in my cart anyway. When I came back today, they were still in the cart (at the discounted prices) but some of the items weren't available any more on the original page. The lesson I come away with on this is if you think you might want something that's on sale, stick it in your cart and if you come back later, it may still be there at the discounted price. Just a thought.

The freebies have been renewed on Daz 3D. This month's specials include the Lee 6 Starter Bundle, Classics Bundle for Genesis, Party Girl (for Genesis), and Deadly Edges (knives, swords, goodies). All together these alone are $254 (but free for now). A few textures and a head model (if you have The Girl 4 base model) are also available.

Also, the February 2020 "Natural Love" Freebies Challenge is complete , and the March 2020 "March Winds" challenge is just getting started . Looking through the entries is always a good opportunity to find free hair, models, and other gear from all around the Daz 3D sphere. It should be a must visit every month.

Hey. I thought I'd try my hand at the . I used one of the images from Pexels as the backdrop for the background off the patio of Utopia Living which was a freebie last month. Images from Pexels can be used for posters, but they could also potentially be used for backgrounds and images out of windows. Heck I've even snaked images from Google Street view for locations. Thanks FranceToast for the lead regarding Pexels.
