People, I feel, are taking the affinity/status mechanic too literally. Regardless of what the game explanation says, the choices where one accrues them are still just a mechanic for the game to collect its data. In the same way that you gain hit points when you level up in an RPG, you don't magically get 10 extra because you went from 10xp to 11xp and BINGO! It's a representative concept of the cardio, endurance, muscle mass, fighting experience etc you've gained up to that time allowing you to fight for a longer time represented by a conceptual "number" that's easy to understand and for the game to track.

For me, and this is just how I personally regard it, affinity is who you are whilst status is how you want other people to see you.

Normally one might expect them to go the same way, but there is no inconsistency when they do not either. Anyone seeing Jacob without witnessing him do anything or ever talking to him will still think him a massive DIK just from the jacket he wears. People who get to know him may have a different perception.

A lot of people display a certain image but act differently when it comes to the crunch. Let's face it, there are plenty of guys IRL who would crack jokes or mock other people from the safety of the mansion balcony (DIK status) but melt back into the background when faced with Caleb (CHICK affinity). Conversely, there will be those that are quiet and polite in public but will step up and kick the shit out of Caleb too.

Let's take Derek. From the day you first see him trolling Cathy at the Orientation to the T-shirts he wears, he is screaming to the world to see him as DIK. Out of sight of others, do I think he will kick a person when he is down? No. Do I think he will jump into a river to save a drowning puppy? Yes. Have I ever witnessed him actually do any of those CHICK things? Of course not. I don't have to. I feel like I know him well enough to see through his pure DIK facade. So do Maya and Josy who believe Derek is actually a nice guy.

This is my "Derek build." The DIK status is off the scale of the bar itself, but affinity is neutral. Coincidently, it is also the build for my Maya/Josy route.

People that don't know this MC well at all - like Camila or Melanie etc. will see the status and treat me as such. M&J, OTOH, both know MC well enough to see past the front to the person. I have no problem with the game's DIK/CHICK mechanic based on how I interpret it.
WOW, Just WOW, Dude, Holy Shit. Well said Man. This is literally the Smartest comment about this subject! . The examples that you used, everything is very well thoughtful. This is how i see it also , but you were able to express you opinion way more and smarter than I was able to do :D.

Experience in AL tells me that when you reject a potential LI, you will not have any chance of initiating it again. But then again I haven't tried rejecting any LIs and Jade is also not a LI but a sex target like the cheerleaders in AL. What you said might happen.
If I recall correctly, Rena could still be the end of game LI even if you don't have sex with her. The MC just has to have a few moments with her and either choose her in ep 6, or have Megan or Melissa leave him after the Leah incident. So, even with minimal interactions, there's still a chance with Rena.

This game, of course, is different, and there have been chances to be locked out of certain LIs like Bella and Sage as you can get that lock symbol on them at the end of ep 3 if you haven't met certain requirements to ask to stay with them. But this recent episode had a forced scene to stay with Bella even if she's locked off and, apparently, even if you're not on either of those paths, there are moments that suggest they could reopen, same with M&J when they tell the MC that they rejected or who rejected them that they do have feelings for him.

Jade may not be a main LI, but the MC will surely want to explain to her why he wasn't there and this could really go either way; he can either end it by not giving an excuse and saying he's changed his mind, or he can try again by making up a reason why he wasn't there. With the latter option, Jade could believe his story and thus be convinced to give him another chance. But it could also be that we, as the player, don't get the choice and Jade dismisses him regardless, kind of like of how the Cathy interactions end without a choice on the M&J path.

So right now, I don't see it being a guaranteed certainty that it's over with Jade until we get a chance to talk to her and I hope we can convince her to give the MC another shot because there are perfectly plausible excuses that could work.

Wrinkle in the carpet? Is there a different interaction w/ her if you click a specific spot?
No, apparently I was super baked and didn't realize that if you click anywhere in the room, the scene pops. It just so happened, that I was looking around her room for special renders and clicked the wrinkle in the carpet when she attacked me LOL. My bad. I blame the marijuana.

If I recall correctly, the walkthrough for AL said that we need to stalk Rena with every opportunity :D There was a playthrough where I interacted with her for a few times, did not go to her house and did not dance with her at the camp fire, and she rejected me at the concert.

Rena is considered a main LI I guess? So that's why I made the distinction of LI and non-LI. So far Jade totally gave me the cold shoulder and I haven't tried a playthrough where I totally reject a main LI (Sage and Bella are too hard to pass up on). I thought the lock symbols are for patreon only in the previous versions. Didn't realize that it means a lock path. I can try a playthrough when I am up for it where I totally focus on one girl and reject all the others and see how the story plays out.

I was playing CHICK affinity in one playthrough and I totally rejected her advances. For that playthrough she totally ignored me at the party (as shown in the screenshot in my previous post).

Well, what I meant by minimal interactions was that you could dance with her, go to her house, etc, but that even without having sex with her, you can still end up with her.

For Jade, I did everything except meet her in ep 4 so my MC has shown a willingness to be with her and this is why I think that, for those who have done this, there could still be a way to get some Jade action, especially since Maya has basically given the MC a free pass to be with other women while they figure out what their relationship is to each other, so he should have issue doing it.

If she dismisses the MC out of hand, then OK, it's not what I would have wanted or think should happen, but there at least needs to be a scene where the MC talks to her about it for those of us that only missed out on that one scene, and I'm pretty sure we'll get that because he'll know he has to straighten things out with her.

Interesting interpretation, man. Affinity - something that reveals only under pressure, thus shows true nature of the main character. However, if we look at list of major dik choices, I'd say it's not the case:
Major (DIK) Choices :
ep.1 - Beat up Troy
ep.1 - Get the number of Quinn's restaurant
ep.2 - Mini-mart : Ignore Steve
ep.2 - Gym : Fight the Jocks (enables Caleb below)
ep.3 - The Pink Rose : Party without limits
ep.3 - Gender Studies (Jade) : Take it further
ep.4 - Roof : Smoke weed
ep.5 - Fight Caleb (requires : Fight the Jocks above)
ep.5 - Hit Tybalt
Roughly only half of the choices are imply pressure and/or a super-tight time frame.

As for status, DPC introduces it like this:

Merely a current mood of MC, which sorta make sense given fast and crazy pacing of our storytelling although polar minor choices within the same playthrough might seem too inconsistent just for one person. Given this and confusing presentation at the end of each episode as you've provided
where status range slapped on top of affinity axis I assumed at first that when we're making a major choice, we're also reducing the maximum possible amount of DIK/CHICK points, which actually is not correct. However, official walkthrough's description confusing about this as well:

Penalty to the status. I wonder if that was original DPC's intention but during the implementation he abandoned the idea or it was the other way around.

Returning to the M/J issue, I disagree that they're capable to see through MC given your interpretation, it's simply too soon storywise. As for what affinity as I see it - simply what defines MC: his reputation, his attitude outside of player's minor choices and I wish even his appearance ajustments (shame that it's next to impossible given technical aspect of the game). To put it bluntly - it's written on his face. It just an example of a bad implementation with M/J, unfortunately. Basically something like this is inevitable within such a relatively complicated game.

I have to agree with you there. Because for the love of god, based on Darkmetal's interpretation, I cannot figure out why being a DIK or normal person that I am (DIK / Neutral affinity), who has been gentlemanly in every way possible (CHICK Status) to Jill and her associates (Bella, Tybalt) is not allowed to shower together with her.

I just grabbed one of my ep.5 ending screens for neutral affinity. As you can see, doing 4 DIK and 4 CHICK choices cut away both the Massive DIK and Massive CHICK area permanently. This blocks events which require Massive DIK or Massive CHICK status for the rest of the game. Even if you only do DIK actions, your DIK score is capped at 15 instead of 20 before. And with the next episodes we likely will loose more parts of our DIK-meter.

Yeah, I hate it when there are times we are required to make decisions like that. The part at the party where I have to choose go back to Maya or stay and party with Sage I can accept, but not the one at the ending of Ep 4. What if I want to be in something more with M/J and bed Jade?

For Rena, I made sure I did EVERYTHING with her to make sure I get her. Now Ana is a surprise to me, a consolation prize even though I did not want to end up with her.

Unfortuneatly : It's not a harem game ... by design.

You have to play the game twice to get M&J and Jade/Cathy.

In AL you had to play the game 3 times to get your endings with Megan, Melissa and Rena.
Except this isn't about it being a harem game, it's simply about how choosing one thing doesn't necessarily have to stop another. In this case, yes, the MC missed out on an opportunity with Jade by deciding to be with M&J and stay at the party with them, but this doesn't necessarily have to end the Jade content on this path when the MC still has ample opportunity to explain to her why he didn't make, even if it would be a lie. Hell, he could have even said to M&J after that, "I gotta be somewhere just now, but I'll see you guys later", and then gone to meet with Jade.

Point is, that just because the MC is on the M&J path, doesn't mean this has to cut off side characters like Cathy and Jade, especially when the MC currently has a free pass to be with other women.

The scene near end of ep5 where Melanie and Sarah watch mc and Sage kissing.

Still completely confused by this scene.

If we assume Melanie means to call Chad, what does she expect to happen? They didn't take a picture, so all she could tell him is that the MC openly kissed Sage. Isn't that what Chad feared was going on back when he first clashed with the MC back in Episode 1? This might be confirmation of his fears, but why does Melanie think this will make Chad less determined to stick with Sage?

Riona thought Chad attacked the MC over Sage, which is a pretty reasonable guess for anyone who doesn't know about the envelopes. Unless Melanie and Sarah do know about the envelopes, then surely they would likewise assume Chad is already willing to fight the MC over Sage. Meaning he would fight to 'defend' the relationship - practically the opposite of breaking up with her. So why do they think hearing she kissed the MC would reverse Chad's response?

Frankly, even if Melanie and Sarah do know about the envelopes I'm not sure how watching the MC kiss Sage would help break up Chad and Sage. Chad's envelope obviously had evidence of some secret Chad wanted to keep hidden; that seems like a much better tool to force a breakup than hearsay about something Chad already suspects.

For the life of me I just cannot see any way to make sense of their actions, unless they really are just crazy chicks who like to stir up shit and feel very slightly guilty about making Sage feel bad.

It's ok if the game cockblock me with the LIs (like going to Bella or Jill or Sage instead of M/J), but with a fling / conquest and have consequences?
