[Note: I still haven't graduated from a law school, nor even attended one, since my last comment, therefore it's still an informed opinion, and not a legal advice.]

This made me laugh, Rebellion and Empire are generic terms that I cannot beleive are covered by copyright.
It's not a question of copyright, but of similarity with the original. There's another word that is clearly not a registered trademark, it's "Force". But, if you put the words "Rebellion", "Empire" and "Force" into the same story, what will be the first thought that will cross most readers' mind, except "Star Wars" ?

The goal behind the use of another words, isn't to avoid using a registered trademark, but to distance the story enough from the original story, in order to not fall under plagiarism and/or obvious copyright infringement.
Take a painting like Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe, by example. It's one of the most copied painting. Many painters, among which Picasso, who made near to 30 painting inspired by it, made their own version of it. Would they have used the same composition, that it would have been a plagiarism. Instead, they transposed the global feeling and the context into their creation, and used their own style for this, what make their own version become a homage.
It's the same that have to be achieved here, and the reason why the most obvious names, even if they have no chance to be registered, have to be changed. The author is then inspired by the global universe of Star Wars, and goes as far as using some concept of the story, but did it by importing them inside his own universe, where the different entities have a different name, this to as a tribute to Star Wars, and not as a plagiarism.

[This is definitively not a legal advice]
In regard of the Law, you are innocent until proved otherwise. Therefore, the more there's doubt of an intention to infringe the Law, the less there's risk to be proven otherwise. It don't protect you, but it lower the risks, and it's already good to take.

what probably won't be safe is the millennium falcon, and other obvious star wars ships and vehicles.
In fact all would depend of how many "objects" will be used, and their proportion in regard of "objects" coming from other universes, or not coming at all from a defined universe. Once again, to distance the story from the original universe, and fall more on the homage side, than on the plagiarism one.

.......[Interesting and well written arguement which I've redacted to save space].........
Oh I wasn't disagreeing with you per se, it brought to mind an article I'd read a while back about King (CandyCrush Saga) sueing Stoic (Banner Saga) for using the word Saga in their game.

The sheer ridiculousness of the American legal system that allows these types of lawsuit without reprisals (other countries might be just as ridiculous, I honestly have no idea, it is always American cases I hear about, sorry if this comes across as racist).

I still beleive that Rebellion/Empire are "safe", but I was also backing your point when I suggested the extended versions, anything that moves away from the precise vocabulary used by disney reduces the risk of them taking any action, I think the bigger risk is the images that definately are copyrighted, I would hope any reasonable judge would throw out case that hinged on words like empire and rebellion, but art such as the Millienium Falcon is unique and protected, your example of "Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe" really isn't the same, the artists who "copied" it created unique works of art the were inspred by it, they didn't take it wholesale, and remember George Lucas made far more from merchandising than the movie it's self, Iconic images of The Millenium Falcon have to be IMO atleast as valuable to them as the principle characters.

I'm still completely incompetent to give legal advice so take what I've written however you want. just my 2 cents.

Don't worry about this. If I feel tense in my answer, assume that it wasn't because of what I answered to, but because I tried to not mess to much while translating my thoughts to English.

See this change as a compromise. Since he already have many renders done, changing too many models would cost a lot in term of time. Therefore, changing the words is here the easiest way to distance himself from the universe.
Justice do not rule based on this, but yet the lower is the "the whole creation really feel like the original" ratio, the better it is. You can more easily use as defense that you really love the X-Wing model, or that it was the only model fitting what you are in mind, if your story talk about the conflict between "The Council" and "The Sanctuary", than if it talk about the "Rebellion" fighting the dying "Empire".

I think the bigger risk is the images that definately are copyrighted,
They are, but look at how many fake Star Wars goodies come from China. Of course, the ruling of an US justice court would surely never be applied by the Chinese government, but Disney could still ask for the product to not be imported. Then, with the help of this ruling, they could start a lawsuit in most Occidental countries to ask for the same. Since the Chinese company know they are in fault, they would probably not spend a penny and not be represented in the court, what would make the procedure (relatively) easy and fast.
Yet they don't do it, or at least not always. Those counterfeiters don't really take market parts to Disney, those who buy these products couldn't really afford the original. But in the same time, their child will play dreaming that his Yota figurine is Master Yoda. Therefore, there's no real harms, and some small benefits, by letting them continue.

It's the goal that have to be achieved here, a limit of the impact ; Disney saying "Ok, this game use some of our patented models, but it's among patented models coming from other SF universes. And anyway it don't really use our story, right ? Of course, there's the Force, but I guess that it's not really avoidable ; since 1977 everyone use the Force. The bad point is that it have porn, but in the same time, it's hard to learn about its existence. Well, I guess we can let it pass."

to bad there is foot stuff in this, could otherwise have been a decent game, oh well.
Foot jobs should ALWAYS be optional. Strange that they are so much more polarizing than, for example, hand or boob jpobs, but they are. Actually virtually all forms of sexual stimulation should be optional. Period.

It's a renpy game, turn on "skip unseen text" in settings and hold control until the scene is over which takes about 0.5 seconds. Not that bloody hard stop whinging.

the English isn't perfect but better than most translations I've seen, only issue is the so far heavy focus on foot fetish, feet should ALWAYS be optional, having no option really takes the wind out of this games sails

Take your boots off after a long hike and your opinion on feet as sex objects will change very quickly.

I hope that there will be a option about futa Yasmea, too. The power of the dark side should provide this.
Nice game, btw. I wish you continued success
