VN - Ren'Py - Abandoned - Above the Clouds [v0.75] [Mundo Games]

A game that looks nice, but when I played it I just couldn't handle it.

The Good:
- Renders and art in general are very good.
- I'll give the dev props for doing something different. It's a high quality game, on the surface at least.

The Bad:
Note, my bad is just personal taste. Not everyone will think the same, obviously.

The game description says " Above The Clouds is a humorous, quirky, and light-hearted VN with a unique storytelling style, presentation..."

I like a good joke. I like light-hearted stuff. Quirky can be fun. But this game is just too over the top for me to enjoy. I can't get into a story that doesn't even attempt to be somewhat serious or reasonable. The Characters are basically walking talking memes.

It's unique for sure, but in a cringy bad comedy way. Humor and comedy is best when it flows naturally. Like when someone pops in with a well timed clever joke. Or when you have a humorous back and forth between characters. Or when something unexpected happens,, like the classic slipping on a banana peel.

But this game doesn't do that. It's too over the top. The cringe literally never stops. You can tell the difference between someone who is naturally funny and someone who tries to be funny. This game is solidly in the latter.

This might be my new favorite AVN and I've "played" so many that I'm pretty sure I have the world's most powerful right arm now

The writing and the visual execution of the jokes are genuinely funny, and the renders are really among the best of all the games on this site. I'm curious where the main story goes.

For V0.4.
Well goddamn, this is first time an actual game got me laughting out loud, including both: games found on this forum, but any other game I played before (AAA or other indie). Just straight up amazing. I cannot tell how much I needed this game.

[RENDERS]
Top tier. On current scale i would say 8.5-9/10, lightning could be improved over time (to get that sexy "oily skin" look). Fca expressions could be improved sometimes, not a dealbreaker though.

[Animations]
When you encounter some they are very well made. Its a shame that it has only a few of them, but i bet that rendering them eats a lot of resources. Hopefully this will improve when author gets more fame and with (hopefully) GPU price reduction.

[Story]
Most inovative (and best) aspect. It is a mix of random funny stuff happening, nothing i have ever seen before. Right now this game has only a loose content structure, but it is benefiting way the story is being told. Nice to found myself laughting with dick in my hand.

[Characters]
Characters are distinct enough to see that they are not just one asset. They are all hot, both looks and with their behaviour. Some of them are stereotypical, as you might expect, which is fine.

This game has pretty renders, good sounds and music, excellent humour with just the right amount of weirdness and a story that doesn't take itself too seriously. If you are looking for a good laugh this is a very enjoyable experience.

In my opinion Above the Clouds [v0.4 Beta] [Mundo Games] is a good game.

• The story is interesting and funny.
• There is content for a couple of hours and a few lewd scenes.
• I didn't find any bugs.
• The music is engaging.

The only good things in this game is the graphics. Not a well-constructed story , no particular direction of the story . And the scripts and plots, I think the developer is trying to make them funny and humourous . But it's neither of them . It's like they are being forced to be funny ..

All around enjoyable

Visuals

• renders and use of lighting are good enough quality
• unique faces, even the male characters! i'm surprised how easy on the eyes Luke, the MC, is - not generic at all
• models have very modest body types - all relatively slim figures. from the amount of VNs i have played, hearing the MC call some of these girls "thick" is a bit embarrassing. i do hope that a more pear-shaped character comes along (maybe Lucy could gain a bit more fat on her hips, js)
• the stepmom is gorgeous
• most of the animations are smooth with good medium loops. however, the penetration animation could use some work. Helen's sex scene in particular was not as good; boobs didn't move naturally, face expression was neutral for something that should of felt intense (for a sex starved angel) and overall the speed was too slow

Writing etc

• love all the family characters as well as the school characters (timmy, mia, nicole) - they are all entertaining in their own way and different. timmy is hilarious with his persistent smile
• the story is told in an absurdist style, littered with humour and perversion - i've never had so many laughs playing a vn
• the VN stays true to it's style by always having all three elements; story, comedy and erotica, merged
• the editing is on point! technically, plot wise, and comedically
• other developers should heed the use of the variety and use of music and sfx this vn offers
• lastly, there are some minor spelling errors here and there, a spellcheck sweep should be in the list

This dev is a chip above the rest in his storytelling, use of comedy, and EDITING

Also, I'm so fucking relieved this game didn't go with the humongous dick = irresistible trope. instead, went for a good-looking cock (that's still big but within the realms of real big).

Lets start with the good parts. The renders are pretty good, the women are attractive and not look all the same like on other games.
I didnt have any problems with bugs that i can remember and the game runs quite well...and my 2 stars rating is mainly for these aspects.
Now the bad parts, all the rest.
The story, well, there isnt a defined and structured story here...there are things happening... and everything is made for the sake of the "comedy".
For me this game is TOTALLY not funny because the principal aspect of comedy for me is time, there is right time to make something funny, but with this game the time is all the time...the jokes just dont stop. The absurd situations just dont stop. The game just jumps around all the time, with absurd things popping on the screen all the time, characters behaving and doing totally absurd things all the time...and because of this aspect of the game you problably will not give a shit about any of the characters, they are there just there for the next joke, and they are a joke in the end.
And i think that even the people that actually enjoy this game will be tired of it really fast due to the excessive nature of the comic aspect....its just too much and unbalanced.

v0.3a

This is an attempt at writing an erotic humor VN and the humor is so forced and falls so flat over and over it's hard to push through the game. It's just nonstop jokes from the moment the story opens and they never get any better. The renders are very good and there's a lot of audio gags. I just wish it were actually funny.

Nice renders , beautiful LI's , light hearted comedy , The game surely holds potential ad surely gives you chuckles while playing it .Not your cliche ones where the father is killed off just for story build up . Looking forward for its future updates

It's fantastic! The girls are sexy and beautiful. The graphics are beautiful. The situations that lead up to scenes are quite exciting. The story narration is actually humorous as claimed. Liked everything about it, except for the bit about how the father looks like Jurgen Klopp!

At first I wasn't sure what to make of Above the Clouds and its over-the-top humour - somehow I even expected to be driven away by it within some minutes.
Well, I was wrong.
The dev manages to walk the fine line of being hilarious without becoming annoying.


Visuals

The renders are excellent with a lot of attention to detail (facial expressions, gestures, etc.).
Minor nitpicking: Some (unpainted) fingernails have an ugly greyish hue and in some scenes parts of clothes (like straps) seem to be "floating" above the character models.

Speaking of which:
The dev has an outstanding taste in attire - if you like well dressed characters, you're in for a treat.

Scene transitions are a class of its own. Perfection.

Animations are also well done.


Sound

Good music and sound effects - especially the latter fit perfectly with the visuals.

There's also a bit of unobtrusive voice work like exclamations and lewdy moans.


Characters

The characters in Above the Clouds are well made and the female cast is very attractive.

Lucy (the older sister) is probably my number one so far, she's drop-dead gorgeous.
Minor nitpick: I think she looks older (late 20s) than she's supposed to be (early 20s).

But then, it's really hard to pick a favourite.

Helen (the angel?) is a little minx and almost equally (smoking) hot.

Hannah (the younger sister) is super cute (and totally 18 years old).

Evelyn (the mom) is also very beautiful, a MILF (almost) done right.
Considering she's Luke's mother and around Henry's age (who still has perfectly brown hair) I'm a bit puzzled why at an age of about 45 years her hair already turned completely grey. Odd.

Speaking of which:
I really like Henry. It's refreshing to see a likable and good looking dad in an adult game for once.
I feel kinda bad for him that "porn game logic" prevents him from having some fun with his wife, but people would likely start screaming "NTR" (no, it's not NTR when mom and dad get it on, but that's like explaining quantum physics to a layman).

The other female LIs (Mia, Nicole and Ember) are also easy on the eyes.

Luke (the MC) is unfortunately the least attractive character (besides Tim) in my opinion.
In some renders he looks downright hideous. He also looks too old.
I wished he would look more like a younger version of his father.

I like that each character has its own distinguishable personality.
Particularly noteworthy: Mia (I'm a big fan of the movie Secretary, so a submissive character is a welcome addition).


Writing

Plausible incest stories require very good writing skills (something most adult content creators lack) and in my opinion only work

• if there's already a very close relationship which evolves into something more,
• within a setting where humanity stopped caring altogether (island, post-apocalypse) or
• by fully embracing the power of humour.

The lighthearted and self-mocking tone of Above the Clouds helps a lot in that regard and makes the incest somewhat believable.

Other than that Above the Clouds is pretty much an ordinary slice-of-life story - no more, no less.
There seems to be an overarching plot involving the father, but so far it's only hinted.

Fortunately, the dev also knows how to write appealing explicit scenes.
Many adult games treat sex either as a treadmill or a raw physical act, but there's more to it:
Reluctance, teasing, tenderness, eroticism and embarrassment (blushing!) make explicit scenes so much better - and it's done masterfully here.
The bathroom / shower scene with Lucy is just incredibly hot.

The English is decent, but there are quite a few typos and grammatical errors.


Choices

The choices so far don't seem to be very meaningful, but mostly for shits and giggles (and to unlock gallery scenes).


User Interface

The UI is rather simple and unobtrusive.

The dev abstained from using a text box - which leaves more room for the renders.
Despite the missing contrast (by the text box) the font is well readable.

As a bonus there's a small gallery with unlockable pictures and animations.


Conclusion

The biggest divisive factor about Above the Clouds is its humour.
You probably either like and embrace it - or you despise it and walk away.
Fortunately, it worked for me.
But more than the humour I really like the characters, their interactions and the eroticism.
If you don't mind a VN that doesn't take itself too seriously, even gets cartoonish at times, check this out.

Funny and hot. The game has an off-kilter humor that bends reality and doesn't take itself too seriously . The plot hasn't come together yet this early in the story. Generally, it's a frame story with a funny but possibly unreliable narrator? The characters are what really sells it. They're all have very interesting quirks and traits beyond the very standard son-family setup that is so popular. I really enjoyed this.

At the time of the review there's enough of a game her to be worth trying, but it's early on. I recommend!

Absolutely fantastic game that lives up to its premise of delivering on humor. I genuinely laughed out loud on more than one occasion, which never happens.

The strongest aspect about the game is without a doubt the skilled use of cuts and transitions alongside sound effects. Absolute mastery of the visual novel medium in this regard.

The models are beautiful and well-distinguished. The player isn't given much of a choice as to how (and whether) to pursue relationships, but that's okay--I like an MC that's more opinionated.

Overall, this is an experience that, once you start, you can't put down until it's finished.

Main theme of the game is humor and its on Average level. I just could not got into game... If you are looking for good story this is not for you. all you find here is forced humor and good renders.

The game is pretty good but it has not much content yet.

The good: Good jokes, i laughed a lot of times; the girls are top quality; the fathers is a really cool guy, the domination scene is amazing.
The bad: Jokes are good but they happen all the time.; I felt bad about cheating on the father with his wife.

I strongly recommend this game if you like the kinks.

If you want to really laugh while playing adult VN try this game. Really loved this game. Good models and renders. Humor is the main thing here. Start as a slow burn then you will get lewd scenes in v0.3a

I was genuinely shocked at how well crafted and polished this game is. Above the Clouds is a game that goes above and beyond when it comes to atmosphere.

Incredible sound design, transitions, music, timing, and much much more qualities make this VN feel truly alive, and Mundo Games absolutely killed it.

This game's main trait is its humor and carefree vibe, a lot of reviews below me are trashing these aspects but I adore this game's humor. The comedic timing, facial expressions, references, SFX, sarcasm, and the unexpectedness of this game's humor sets it apart from other games IMO. This game is just really well written.

As for characters, pretty much the entire cast is likable and/or intriguing, no complaints here.

Can't say much about the story because it doesn't really feel like we've gotten to the thick of it yet, but there for sure is potential.

Now for the porn stuff. The girls all look pretty good. The mom for me is in a whole league of her own, she is by far the hottest woman in this game. Animations are nice, and you just can't beat incest. Not an insane amount of sexual content yet, but this game is only at 0.3 at the time of this review so that's to be expected.

Can't wait to see what the future awaits for this game and this VN deserves all the love and support it can get.

The renders are very good as is the structure. There are however a few things that irk me then are as follow:

• Story is disjointed and often doesn’t follow a logical progression.
• Humor is god awful. One thing is to not take yourself seriously but you are still witty and funny. Another is to not take yourself seriously and be annoying.
• The mc is not the typical sexual predator but is on the line.

Having said all of these things, I would still give this one a try.
