It's an Old High German name that roughly means "fighting (wig) battle (hadu)". The more common English writing is Hadwig. You may also know the Polish version Jadwiga.P. S. Is Hedwig a reference to Harry Potter, or just common english/american name?
When you look at the "famous people" section carrying the name you will notice that most of them were born between the end of the 19th and the first third of the 20th century. Since then the name has mostly fallen from grace.
