It's true. The actual gameplay is kinda lame, because u just hold down and punch. Then walk to the next enemy's and repeat.

You don't need to, if you just want to get through the level. But you are right, rolling is fine and running with punching works to. One needs to punch really early, so one doesn't get hit.
