I've had a bunch of black background scenes like that 10 minutes in a new game in the v17 too, figured it was just them talking while in the mini RPG map but there's no map obviously

OP has been updated with 1.8

Unfortunately, I have reworked how my scripts convert RPGM variables and switches to Ren'py effectively breaking all save-games. This may have introduced some bugs in the story-flow. Let me know if you find any.
While there is a rumor about an 1.8.1, I released this anyway so more people can test it

In regards to the possibility of an 1.8.1, I suggest making a save at the pool party scene. Any later save may have issues depending on where Deepsleep changes the story. Unless there is a game breaking bug in the conversion, that save should keep on working.

I looked in to the scene from the attached screenshot.
In the RPGM Anna would have been sitting at her desk when the doctor calls to set up the MRI appointment so this particular scene has no background.

Remember: early game has some black screen scenes. I only started this conversion around 0.7 and I think only from 0.9 and upwards took Deepsleep this in to account to avoid black screen scenes in the conversion.
The most common occurrences of black screen scenes are Anna serving customers in the coffee shop and early bar scenes and making/taking phone-calls at her desk
