For me, an older game version started working fine after I put these two dlls in the game folder (where the game's .exe is).

Hi I'm having troubles installing the game. I don't see any illusion.msi file (in fact no files named illusion, in any of the folders). Can somebody point me in the right direction?

I'm having the same issue. I don't see anything named Illusion or having a msi file ending. I downloaded from the Mega link.

is there a workaround?

yes. you need an old d3d9.dll and place it into the AA folder. at least that's how it works for AA2.
here a small tutorial with a link for a d3d9.dll:

now keep in mind that i don't know if the same trick works for the old AA1. and if you are really unlucky (like me) the dll won't work and you actually need dgvoodoo2 (which is provided for AA2 in the mod artifical academy unlimited - hence the reason why i know that gdvoodoo can be used as a solution too). this program is actually extremely useful for making older games on the pc work. you can even get old win2000 and ME to work. it works like a charm.

this one has more animations & romance features & random AI behaviors,

the sequel added teachers & safe locations & dating,
however it has less animations & crappy male personalities.

I don't mean to complain but the installation of this is way overly complicate. A lot of instructions are vague at best. For example it says to change the default location but it doesn't tell to where. It seems to me this could be as simple a just installing the game via a wizard then installing a English patch and that's it. Not do this do that change the name of this or change location I am just a bit paranoid with installing all these things without knowing what I am installing.

Sequel is better in terms of gameplay. You can even get students murdered in it!

At the risk of sounding like a villain, manipulating evil characters into killing their cheating bf's/gf's was one of my most memorable experiences in the game

Another installation method.


1) Install an app like Locale Emulator (to run Japanese apps).
2) Mount DISK1 (to drive [D:]), DISK2 (to drive [E:]), using an app like WinArchiver.
3) R-Click, Open DISK1's Drive, run ILLUSION　ジンコウガクエン; select (N), then (C) and replace JP characters to "AA" (abbreviated game's name--no quotation marks), then (N), (I) (it'll ask for ADM permission--accept). Wait. Select (F) (done).
4) R-Click, Open DISK2's Drive, in the "edit" folder run ILLUSION　ジンコウガクエン きゃらめいく, follow above steps--at (C), name AAEdit.
5) Run Artificial_Academy_HF_Patch4.0, go through the installation process (choose "C:\illusion\AA" as destination).
6) Place AAPlay NoDVD.exe (from the folder of similar name) in C:\illusion\AA.
7) Run AAPlay English, configure the game.
8) Place d3d9.dll in both C:\illusion\AA and C:\illusion\AAEdit folders.
9) Run AAEdit through Loader.
10) Run the game through AAPlay NoDVD.
11) Done.

Wow original AA. One of my first Illusion game. Gonna redownload this for old time sake. I still have AA2 and AG3 on my computer, but another illusion game for the collection.
