You also got a bunch of stuff wrong in your next post, but I don't feel like correcting you there. You can just check wikipedia on that.
I will, though.

Long azz series of extremely technical sci-fi novels that were often as difficult to read as they were attention grabbing.
Six books, so not all that long.

Later was made for n to a cult classics mini series with an all-star cast (many big names started there). Author or someone hated the main actor.
It was made into a movie by David Lynch in 1984, and the only really big name that got his start there was Kyle MacLachlan (Paul). That Frank Herbert (author of Dune) hated him is total nonsense, they got along great:

1753389755510.png

Years later, after several video games and even more books, another miniseries was done to reboot the concept...it sucked...big time (didn't have any of the things made Dune - well...DUNE!). More stuff happened. Think a movie was attempted. Eventually, ANOTHER miniseries was made, which actually had all the things the second film was missing. Was a big hit.
There was a Sci-Fi Channel (SyFy) miniseries of Dune in 2000 and one of Dune Messiah + Children of Dune in 2003, both by the same producer and screenwriter, John Harrison (who also directed the first one). Both miniseries were successful in terms of viewership, with many Dune fans rating the second one more highly (due to the acting, directing and production values, with improved costume designs, sets and special effects).

I don't think there were any serious attempts to get a new movie made in this time frame, but Paramount had a go between 2007 and 2011, with Peter Berg set to direct.

If you ever saw the original (long as hell made-for-tv miniseries... Was it two 4-hour epidoes? Source new at least close, but would have to check), if you saw it, you would NEVER mistake it for entry by else.
As mentioned, it was a theatrical movie by David Lynch. In 1988 it was reedited for TV into two parts totaling 186 minutes (plus commercials), without Lynch's involvement and against his wishes; he had his name removed from this version, replaced by "Alan Smithee."

BEHIND THE DUNE's character designs resemble the original styles somewhat. You could also look at the 1990s DUNE videogames, as those used the same actors as the original first film.
Behind the Dune is primarily a porn parody of the 1992 game Dune by Cryo (published by Virgin), which used the likenesses of a couple of the actors from the 1984 film (MacLachlan as Paul and Francesca Annis as Jessica, with Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen's face slightly modified from Sting after Cryo tried and failed to get permission to use his likeness; the CD version also included a clip from the film of Virginia Madsen as Princess Irulan). Other characters do not resemble their movie versions, and none of the other 1990s computer games use any of the actors from the film. (The Westwood Dune RTS games use many of the Lynch movie's costumes, as well as its sandworm design, and some of the actors are lookalikes imitating the original movie actors, though they are supposedly playing different characters.)

The two main things that have carried over from Lynch's Dune into Behind the Dune are the sandworm design and Paul and Jessica's hair styles.

Well, damn, ninja'd. And you did a better job summing up the Dune franchise than I did. Only thing I have to add is that technically there are far more than six books, if we include those not written by Frank Herbert himself.

And in that case I guess we also have to mention that Dune: Prophecy series, which is based on one of Brian Herbert's books.

reynold.biplane keeps a repository of most versions of BtD. You can find it in his signature. That's why he's rather aware of what was in older versions of the game. Actually, you might find it useful to check that repository, you'll find older BtD versions there that you may like better.
The only issue I had with the comment was that they were saying it never existed, when I recall those things in particular. Do I want to see that stuff again? Not really. I only asked since it is like reading a book and having chapters missing that you've read before. Otherwise, I wouldn't have asked about it. This is not the only game this has happened to, especially given when it was originally created. Sorry about b!tching before, but it gets old being told something about one game or another concerning missing content by people who simply don't know. They don't know about it, fine. But being told it's all BS is....annoying as all hell.

By long, I meant the books themselves, not the series. The series is actually used by publishers now as an example of what not to do. Any books written in the same way today will not get published, typically, because people simply won't buy them. I am not complaining about this series. I happen to like the series. but the books, individually, are tedious and long - difficult for the average adult to read easily. The language is considered too complex. This is paraphrasing what some editors have flat out stated to me in discussions of other works. Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' series is in the same boat.

It might be annoying, but it's the truth. Sometimes people simply misremember things. And I'm not saying you misremember about every game. Indeed, lots of games had existing content cut throughout development for a variety of reasons, including self-censorship. Behind the Dune had content removed too, but not the stuff that you mentioned. That's just how it is. Go and play the old versions, if you don't believe me. They're available. And stop telling me I don't know, when I have followed the development of this game uninterrupted since almost the very beginning.

Never read/seen/played anything Dune related. All I know is there is desert and a drug called spice melange. I'm planning on this being my introduction to the Dune universe. Do you guys think I will be able to understand what's going on?

Yeah, you'll probably have questions as the story goes on, but they won't stop you from enjoying the game. You can always find a brief explanation of the Dune universe online (on Dune Wiki or YouTube).
If you want to really get into the story, I'd say you should start with the first book in the Dune series.

Really? I read them when I was 14 or 15, and so did a few other friends.

Not trying to brag or say you're wrong, I'm just surprised. LOTR is even tougher IMO, but that gets read by teenagers too (or at least it did back in my day (oldmanyellsatcloud.jpg))

To say that the books are too long for today's market is just bullshit. If a publisher told you that, they were lying or clueless. If you check out the list you'll see that, length-wise, Dune is pretty typical for the genre, and that a number of popular modern SF/fantasy books are considerably longer, both volume-by-volume and as a whole. (Take the Malazan series, for example.) And there are LitRpg books that dwarf the Dune series by word count.

As for the writing, I don't think anybody should try to mimic Frank Herbert's style (just like I don't think you should try to mimic Kurt Vonnegut or Anthony Burgess's Clockwork Orange style), but, again, there are still successful genre books that are written in fairly challenging language, and the gimmick of throwing new readers into an unfamiliar world with lots of strange words that they have to pick up and make sense of has not gone out of fashion. Cf. Paolo Bacigalupi, N.K. Jemisin, Jeff VanderMeer, Cory Doctorow…

Also, if Dune was too difficult to read, it wouldn't be a best-seller even today.

IDK what's wrong but for me the game is totally unplayable. Even if I follow the walkthrough it doesn't help. I don't get the option to see Lady Jessica first scene, I can't click the the golden plaque in the daydream scene, even from the gallery it doesn't help. Like am I doing something wrong? or the game is just broken? I am using a ruffle to run the .sfw file

I've never tried to run the game with ruffle, but I imagine that's the problem.
Try to run the game with flash player, as intended (which you can still do on your computer - use the one I attached), or use the exe instead of the swf. It already contains a flash player.

Thanks a lot, it did the work for me.

1st off, if you want to view the gallery scenes, just head over to Tsimpo-Pyons and keep clicking on the tower until you see the message like in the first screenshot.

And you can download an archive from another thread that includes save files with scenes that don’t show up in the gallery.

These saves are missing the scenes added in the last update though. I should take the time and play through the game again, and make use of the new 3 save slots so you don't have to switch the files all the time to for different post-games and non-repeatable scenes.

Problems and solutions for running this game on Linux.
  • .swf in Ruffle shows a bunch of random UI elements and with broken game states. It's very broken. I tested it with a few other games. For example, it can't run MNOG2 at all. It just doesn't render most of the game objects. And shits out a bunch of errors in debug console. Same with BTD.
  • .exe on Wine regularly freezes the system. It is basically .swf bundled with Adobe Flash Player 11 .exe. Works much better with GE-Proton than regular Wine.
