Simply put, becoming too greedy will start to alienate people. EA lootbox shenanigans?
But i'm on the side that says trying to sell merch assosicated with porn is not exactly the best idea. For example i really don't wan a mug with Bella's titties on it despite my adoration toward those you see. RL reasons. Just having a decently dressed Bella? Why bother.
Actually i do prefer steam release myself. Buying the full product. I don't support the crowdfunding development donations model thingy myself due to reasons. So i'd sooner buy a steam release. He did well to offer the "retail" option.
But is it too greedy. I mean you buy merch and get something in return. That sounds a lot less greedy then some people we may know from YouTube or Twitter or Twitch that have a multitude of donation methods that sound like a never ending money sink. *Some of those Twitch THOT donation goals.. Seriously*
Sure porn might not be the best to associate your merch with but it doesn't have to be. I'd buy a DIK and Jock jacket. Hell I'd even buy a replica of that construction helmet with the dildo on it for a laugh. Even our good friend
name88 would probably buy a nice pillow case of Princess Quinn. Merch doesn't have to be overtly sexual but I'd wager for some people it's more rewarding than throwing money into a patreon. As a regretful backer of Star Citizen I know where I'd want my money going.
Now the real meat of the argument is would DPC be able to set up a site that allows the sale of merch while not taking any of the development focus from the game. I have no clue to be completely honest, I'm unsure about how merch works but I'd believe there is a case for DPC to sell merch if that is now or down the line is another argument entirely.
I agree with buying the steam release and intend on doing so. However I'd argue how much of that money is actually going to DPC. Because the last I read steam takes 30 or 40% unless there is a different rule for Indies. Ontop of that being a one time purchase unless people decide to gift the game out.
*Edit* Not trying to be argumentative or appear to be. Just making a case.
