I think the scenario is alright, realism aside, Patrick is a control freak who hates what Maya represents, traumatized her since childhood with his bullshit 'religious' views and even worse til he learned she had a lesbian relationship. Well, no; again, they had no way of knowing they'd have such a way to pay back their loan. So they had to have some actual plans how to pay it, and reliable source of financing, in the first place.
