Yes, but it still sounds like a bad joke..Considering how heavily fortified the Patreon versions are.

That was exactly my thought when I saw the difference in Patreon/Steam builds.
Steam UE4 build works the exact same way. The only time they did put some kind of protection was on the very first UE5 Steam beta build where they wrapped the basic Steam DRM on the .exe (also very easily removable btw).

Cracking the Steam version seems to be fairly easy, or at the very least low risk

Cracking the Patreon build results in the person doing the cracking getting their account blocked. The devs can easily find out who did it and apparently crack-down hard on would-be crackers

That's the Patreon/Subscribestar downloader and launcher, and it requires you to login in order to download. When you login it makes a file that the downloaded copy of the game will use to verify your credentials. That file has compromising information about your account and without it the game gives you an error message before you even reach the title screen.

Luckily this update also came out on Steam at the same time and the Steam version's protections are trivial to remove.

I'm not looking for the cracked game, lol. Aside from sharing update posts when they come out, I'm here to talk about the game on the rare occasions when this thread is about the game rather than the developers.

You have to leave the starting area, complete the Masquerade quest then visit the shrine to change your appearance.

That one puzzled me at first too and I thought I had a censored build or something. It's part of the game's natural progression; by defeating a magical boss creature you gain the ability to break free of your magical "formless" bindings and to change your shape whenever you like. It's integrated with the game's lore fairly well, even if it means you spend the first few hours going "Wtf, I thought there was sex in this game!" Then you get the ability and suddenly you can walk around hanging werewolf dong and giant tits whenever you like.

Well, I'm trying to.. but when I loaded back in I've lost so much. I've lost my Quest Log, level, still have my equipment, but now I cannot fast travel or anything.

Now I'm totally confused because I'm running around everywhere trying to find the Quest. The game has far too much freedom during the tutorial phase.. I'm constantly being rejected everywhere I go because I'm formless.

Last thing I did was attempt to kill a purple witch or something, then an obelisk is making my head hurt and now I have the equivalent of 'Detective Mode' from Batman

As a PreAlpha I really wish they just let you skip this shit.

You've just come across the classic breakable stuff, the joys of EA... Sadly, the only way to fix this is to start over.
At the moment, if you wanna enjoy the game, you'll have to either not play at all and wait for fixes or play in a single sitting without saving/loading and/or dying. The moment the game uses the save/load system, it will break. Been like this since the first UE5 beta.

Well, that doesn't happen too often, but it is an existing and persistent bug, in any case.

The temporary solution is to save the game BEFORE starting an important quest, and then save again when you approach a crucial fase such as a boss fight or something.

Still, you have to be always ready to roll back to a much older save, in case the latest saves appear to be broken.

Even then. I've stopped counting how many times a quest breaks or an important NPC permanently disappears with this method. The save/load system is just flawed. EA I know, but still, not an excuse. It should have been the first thing to fix.

Unreal and Unity both have actively worked to make it so you can develop games without ever touching a single line of code. Unfortunately, not everyone can handle that approach well and it will come back to bite you if you're not exceptionally thorough on QA.

Current dev team appears to have all of the original members. But twenty+ years of dev experience does not mean they're programmers. At least one of the members is very clearly specialized in 3D modeling, and they seem to do a ton of their rigging and textures in house as well. So while they don't appear to have any professional programmers, they definitely have professional developers.
