At least for Artemis, I don't think grasping that she's an AI is sufficient given her significant role in this story. She's given complete control of the gene editing technology that Jaye and Mallory (and the MC if we agree) spent considerable time assuring us was extremely perilous. People who know Artemis only as a remarkably capable AI that Amanda met in a sex-chat forum are rightly going to wonder why a random robot is a more suitable guardian than someone they already know is a decent person (like, say, Dr. Sophie Allard).I don't think you really need to have played Artemis or Summer Scent to get the gist of what was being conveyed. Even the person I was explaining it to understood that she was an AI, and from what I remember the SS cameo is just a short scene where Jaye talks with Eve on the phone. Obviously you do get more out of it if you've played the games though.
This game shouldn't rely on our familiarity with a separate game to provide characterization for plot-relevant actors. You could fairly easily replace Artemis with someone else, say, the Lone Gunmen from the X-Files or or Demona from Gargoyles and (lawsuits aside) it wouldn't change the events within this game at all - but it would have a significant effect on how we view the eventual use to which the gene editing technology would be put. IMHO that's too much context to be left as homework for the player.
