No one can know for sure about validity/non-validity of devs behavior, the beauty of net.And I'm not going to disagree with you about the need for communication. However, there are a lot of developers who fall down on that point, CZ isn't alone in being terrible about it. At least he has a valid reason unlike others. That said if people support him on Patreon and are unhappy with the level of communication or activity they should cancel their support and move on. No one is forcing them to continue their support.
Due to a lot? of "elite" devs (gumdrop, icstor, veqvil etc) behaving in such "casual" manner, there are smaller, or even novice, devs taking the same approach at some time.
Imo that is the main problem, behind any particular case - when this game-developing-patreon job becomes a perfect milking opportunity for those lucky/canny enough..and all under cover of "free support", and similar things (go-fund-me can only envy those "artists")...If that trend continues ("free willed" supporters hooked to/funding numerous lazy/manipulating devs) those few hardworking devs probably will become extinct species soon enough.
Yet, to not go OT, I do hope dev of this promising game is well, and that he will post anything soon enough, just to clear things up...If not (and if he continue to use patreon "benefits"), in my book he is a small-scale milker exploiting a bunch of shee...free-willed patrons, unfortunately.
