the game is REALLY good, we just need to help get more eyes on this project and more supporters will appear...
I agree. If someone liked this game just add it to your signature, there are already 3 variants of fan signatures on the first page. This is simple but effective way to help developer get more views and supporters. He mentioned bad hardware which also slowing down work on the game, considering high quality renders.

Can't help but feel that a lot of the reason for this dev's lack of success in this game is that the MC's issues probably hit close to home for a lot of people. It's a big risk making your adult game's plot revolve around deep mental issues. The synopsis in the OP doesn't exactly sell the game very well, either (understatement...) The first time I tried this game, I didn't like it at all. It wasn't until version .3 that I gave it another shot and started to enjoy it, and I still can barely stomach the first half of the game.

Also, if your update schedule is erratic, you're not going to be getting much exposure. If you're working fulltime on the game, there's no reason you can't split an update in half in order to double the chance of new players discovering your game. I'm sure I'm far from the only one who only searches for games by latest updates. Announcing that you're considering abandoning the game, while admirable (good on you mate), isn't the best decision if lack of support is the reason he doesn't want to continue. Tbh I'm downright surprised this dev has gotten such a high patron count with all that I've said so far. Says wonders for this dev's ability.

actually is the opposite for me... I played and enjoyed a lot of games on this site... but is BECAUSE this game hit me so close of home, that I decided to support it on Patreon.

Sure, I can see why that'd be the case for you, and seeing the MC crawl out of that deep dark hole is therapeutic but I remember how divisive this thread was in the initial release of the game. A lot of people reacted pretty poorly.

There are likely multiple factors at play. Slow update schedule is certainly a factor in low growth potential and speed. A lot of people self insert. Some of those people can only self insert. In general, people who self insert want some type of wish fulfillment escapism where they are a chad or a nice guy magic cock dude with girls just falling into his orbit. There will always be push back when you portray a vulnerable or fallible MC. A well written, enigmatic character like Elsa taking command of the MC probably hurts their ego. Also, playing as a depressed dude is probably not fun for obligatory self inserters. Even in games that are more blatantly framed as a "growth of the MC" type of story, you will have people complaining that the MC is a loser or something. Not being able to name the MC probably took out a chunk of these self inserters by itself too.

I think a large portion of the player base gives zero fucks about good writing in the narrative or literary sense. To many, good writing is when there are nice, quirky girls bantering with the MC. It makes them feel good to date girls and get closer to them by being a "nice guy." Basically, I believe there is kind of a direct correlation between wish fulfillment and patreon support.

edit: To be fair, it might be a bit disingenuous to frame this statement in a way that blames the romance crowd. Wish fulfillment can go both ways. Players who like to play a clearly bad guy corrupting women and such in a tropey way exist too (although it's a definitely a smaller piece of the pie). That is also wish fulfillment of the power fantasy type. This group also do not like to see their MCs "losing" to women or just generally being weak. So the games that try to tell a more grounded narrative with realistic and multifaceted characters generally find it harder to find their audience.

I wanted to do a character analysis since this game is still on my mind 2 days after playing it.

MC: Well adjusted college kid goes through some emotional trauma and spirals into a cycle of apathy and depression. He copes by shutting out the world and relying on the safety of his routine life. Many years later, the pain from the initial trauma is all but forgotten, but he remains stuck in the hole, living life like a drone. Gets jolted awake by a seemingly unobtainable infatuation which finally nudges him out of the comfort zone. With the help of the mysterious Elsa, he is on his way to self improvement through the good old "fake it til you make it" method. Will he be the same person when he reaches his goals? Will he turn into a corporate asshole? Will Alice even like what he becomes to seem worthy in her eyes? There certainly seems to be 2 "routes" possible. One is to act alpha and callous, practicing his interpersonal skills and confidence building with side chicks like Lucy. The other route, which I didn't play out, seems to be where he remains a genuine, but rather simpy, dude.

Alice: The pie in the sky. The pussy on the pedestal. The ultimate goal. We don't know much, but she certainly seems nice. Looks like she had some decent upbringing. That said, some of her spoiled nature is shown in subtle ways. She is also damn hot and she knows it. Probably very used to everyone hitting on her. What is she thinking when she catches the MC perving on her? Her true nature is not revealed and that really puts us on the same page as the MC. She seems like the perfect angel, but once we get to know her better, will she really be all that we made her out to be?

Elsa: The enigma. The ice queen. What are her motivations? What is her background? We can infer that she is super rich. Possibly from a very high class upbringing. What is she even doing in a low level position in the company? What was her introduction where it seemed like she was being propositioned by the CFO(?)? Maybe it wasn't propositioning. Maybe she is his daughter being assigned a low lvl position for training or something. I'm not sure. She is very confident. On top of things. Commanding aura. Not talkative. Good at reading people. Knows too much about the company and seems to be overqualified for her job. She is playing a game. Almost like the MC is her pet project. Why? She does seem genuine in considering the MC her friend though.

Lucy: The basic bitch. Possibly a gold digger. Clearly on a lower rung than Alice or Elsa in terms of social standing. I only did the path where you lie to her that you are some exec and bang her every chance as friends with benefits. She is certainly infatuated. She wants the MC. She is jealous. A bit clingy. But she is not a caricature. She still has her pride. She doesn't want to be just some side bitch to the MC and acts out in her own way. Super hot sex scenes.

Tommy(?): Best friend. Real bro. Outgoing. Grounded. Realistic. Playboy, but in a confident way rather than some pervy douchebag comic relief way. Don't want MC to hang his whole future on some girl he barely knows. The realistic expectation would be that he will fail to get her and then possibly go into an even bigger depression. Helps out the MC in his own way, by setting him up with chicks.

Boss: Forgot her name. We don't know much. She is said to be smart and competent. Bitchy. Looks down on others. Selfish. Real hottie though. Possibly blackmail target? Yummy.

That one redhead coworker: Forgot her name. She seems like she has feelings for MC. Pretty subtle tells though. Might be a red herring. What is her relationship with that other chick from the upper floor? She seems pretty timid. It also seems like she is being targeted by the office monkeys in some way.

Ex-gf: Super ultra clingy. Pretty unstable. Probably felt like MC was drifting away and that work out maniac roommate played on her insecurity to bang her. There is a choice for moving on or wanting revenge on her. We can guess that she will be back in the picture at some point. I like unstable relationships, so I kinda look forward to interacting with her again lol. Also, if the MC is climbing that corporate ladder, witnessing his success would be a blow to her. Doubly so if she actually ended up with that roommate and he failed to make anything out of himself. Triply so if she sees you getting chummy with Alice. I have many scenarios playing in my mind that would be really hot if she comes crawling back. It's also possible that she might be humanized and her mistakes put in a more sympathetic light. We will have to see.

Yes, not every story has to be a feels good story where you bang you mother and sisters, even though it gets less support.

Will Mc stay the asshole that he is now or will he evolve and become a decent human being?
I think it's up to the player, the dev is giving the choice (through all the previous choices)

I hope Lucy isn't exclusive to the asshole route. Even though she turned out to be a gold digger, she was kinda nice in a casual setting. Who knows, where their relationship could have went, if the MC didn't push it in the direction he did.
Also, she's thiccccc.

This is a very well put analysis on the "average VN player" and I couldn't agree more. You could even apply this to most story mediums out there nowadays, movies, novels, TV shows, but also food etc.

Truth is it's hard in this day and age to ask for some commitement and involvement from most people. They just want easy to consume and digest stories/food/music/politic/philosophy. Things that confirm their bias, fulfill their fantasies, satisfy their basic needs in a quick fashion.

Hence my respect for devs such as Sqwl. He has a story to tell, it's not an easy one, but he sticks to it and its needs. That's also why I support him (if only so much) and wish for him to take the time he needs.

Weird thing about Lucy is originally I didn't care for her so I rejected her (twice?). But then there's the scene when they watched a show together and I felt like she could be a good friend to the MC. Anything more wouldn't make sense story-wise since the MC is laser focused on getting with Alice. But when I saw her walking back to her apartment with another person suddenly she became more desirable. I wonder why's that with me.

It is a very nice, mature and realistic game. It is not for people looking only for porn. Relative lack of support IMO comes from short and delayed updates.

IMO every girl in the game is better looking than the coveted Alice character. For a main LI I dont find her all that attractive looks wise. Anyone else feel the same way?

Apart from that, ch 4 is great as always. The comedic timing and the framing of certain scenes is something I rarely see in other VNs. For instance, the scene where the mc wakes up with a hangover, then gets up from his bed revealing that Tommy is sleeping beside him the entire time, was impressive. There is clearly a lot of thought put behind not just the dialogue, but the positioning of characters.

The recurring gag where the mc has to rearrange his room every now and then is also really growing on me. It's funny and the lack of dialogue fits perfectly. On that note, it's interesting that the entire bar sequence was devoid of any dialogue. I think it's a missed opportunity for some witty dialogue but I guess it was a conscious decision by the devs to do it? Or was it a last minute omission?

Finally the intimacy in the Lucy sex scenes is great and consistent with previous chapters. More devs should take notes from this game on how to do sex scenes. It's crazy that is without any animations whatsoever.

Either way Im really excited for future chapters. This is a sleeper hit.
