Yes, you can avoid it and turn it on or off anytime you like from the in game options while playing. (upper right corner by clicking the corruption meter.)

It's a hot fix for Chapter 3, adding stuff that was missing and polishing up stuff that was in there earlier. So yes, continuation and "new story" in the next chapter.
