What I do in Gimp, works same in PS is duplicating the image as a new layer, gaussian blur the new image, make it lighter with curve, and overlay it as soft light.

Go back to basics, remove the colour by going B&W, play with contrast, shadows, saturation...Copy the original as per your first reply....See how that goes...
