Experiments with bump maps failed or?
Experiments are always a sucess. You gain either the result you want or the experience to avoid unwanted results in the future.
Scale the textures down, so that they look more natural. If your textures are delivered with normal-, bump- and/or displacement maps, then insert them in the appropriate places of the shader settings. If they aren't, well, you could use freeware like "Insane Bump" to generate such maps or create them by yourself, in an image editor of your choice.
