What abomination is this?!

What exactly did you do get here? Slapped the hair on, spun some dials? The older hairs have terrible adjustments that result in precisely what you see here. Don't know how to fix them apart from working around those poses.

Lexx, I don't think you can change the hair material, but you can tweak the shaders with Colorwerks.

Could be. I couldn't really notice, more like tweaking the overall texture response to light. But I could be wrong.

Yes, you're right. My bad. Checked the surfaces tab and indeed it changes the trexture.

I used shaders from OOT IrayPair Hair Shader, but my result is clearly different from outoftouch
