Still have some save, apparently, too.
But with the newest version, when I try starting it, it immediately closes again, leaving no meaningful logs.

So you're willing to spend time asking this, then waiting for answer, then possibly tampering with game code or system settings to fix this grand issue of losing your 20minute playthrough save from who knows how long ago?
Start new save or use the checkpoints or whatever they are called (you jump ahead in story timeline you last experienced). And yes game has made many changes that both require you to start new save and also content is different in some parts.

For the last updates there always was the recommendation by the dev to start a new game, since previous saves would not work correctly or work at all.

I'm not trying to load an old save, I don't even reach the main menu.
The only reason I'm sure the game does actually start is because I can see it in the task manager for a few seconds (and occasionally a black screen for a fraction of a second.
I am quite able to read patch notes.

My bad, I thought it closes as you load old save. If game doesn't start it's probably because it has newer Renpy engine that does not support your system. Are you on 32bit or on older OS? That might be it. If not you should join games discord and talk to dev.

Did you actually read any of the roadmaps?
The current characters and story are just the intro. The game is eventually going to move entirely into some kind of "isekai" / otherworld, which would be the main part of the game.
So when reading the roadmap about "aim at body parts and shoot", i thought this was some euphemistic joke about cumshot choices for sex scenes.
But no, the dev is actually serious. He wants to make some sci-fi-fantasy RPG from this. That's why you have the inventory and all that stuff.

NTR needs to be enabled in content options (don't ask why this applies here)
You must not steal the condoms nor the lube during freeroam
Then you need to take your GFs call, and choose the "only use one earplug and hear my surroundings" option when/if it appears. Then investigate the noise.
Not sure if other conditions were required.
