Its subverting the entire point of the Childhood Friend trope. Its not about 'settling for each other after our ho phase'. Its the same with having a game with family members having scenes getting fucked left and right and MC is the only one that can't be with them. Those hypothetical scenes exist just to subvert the 'incest' genre(and appeal to other kinks, but that is beside my point), or a virgin at the start of the story that loses her virginity right before the MC can get her etc.

I don't know where this trend originated in AVNs, but lately is everywhere, take popular thing shit all over what people like about that thing. I still blame Ruin Johnson, that mfer popularized subverting expectation for the sake of subverting expectations , now everyone feels the need to give their 'spin on tropes', not realizing that tropes became tropes for a reason.

Well, it's encouraging that quite a few games don't follow this trend and the childhood friend saves himself for the MC without them living together. This most likely caused negative reactions due to the fact that they lived together since childhood.
And I think there would be a lot less negativity if you could refuse to start a relationship with her, but the game is essentially kinetic and everyone will be forced on you.
But sad as it is, this is the developer’s vision, it’s up to him to decide how to lead the story.
