Those are market builds, and they won't work natively unless you download it directly from Steam.
You need to either allow it through gatekeeper, or give it permissions.
Alternatively, build your own Mac build with the SDK.
Here is more information about market builds and a quick guide for making a Mac build, I mean it's the samething I do when I make compressed builds.

The underlying code changed my arse. save files are just a bunch of labels and variables he could have easily made an save file converter for this to not waste people's time. he is just lazy or doesnt care.

Secondly, like are you dumb or are you dumb, how tf is an old save that contains old variables from the old events that no longer exist in the game works properly without breaking in a whole new set of code? If it that easy to make a converter for the saves why don't you show the class how to do it? I'll grant you that glory.

i would suggest you study programming and RenPy version changes to get a proper answer to your "issue". because, according to you, a script rework should be exactly the same, regardless of version, which completely invalidates the need for a game engine upgrade and all the optimizations that brings. the answer to your "problem" is actually in the version change patch notes for RenPy itself. have fun reading.

The dev is in a privileged position compared to everyone else, and things that are easy for him are not automatically that easy for everyone else. Everyone else would have to pore through the entire script of both versions looking for all the variables that changed to convert them from the old form to the new, the dev already knows all these variables because he's the one making the game. Ofc the dev knows where and where all the variables has been changed, it his game, but not every saves from everyone has the same variables and persistent. Changing it manually already a hard enough job already let alone making a workable converter that compatible for every saves. Do you understand this now?

Blows my mind that the same people who were complaining when v17 dropped are still complaining about the same thing when they could have finished their new save in 17.1.2 ages ago
I've personally been meaning to do a fully replay of DS for a while now but was holding off until after the update because we all knew old saves were going to break due to the coding rework. That, and I wanted to see the revamped scenes. So I rebuilt my saves the slow way and I finished that weeks ago, then did it again with 17.1.2 to account for bug fixes. These complainers, however, could have held the skip button and caught up to v17 in a matter of minutes... yet instead of doing that, they're still here moaning about their broken saves from v16...
