Finally got around to playing this game after frequently seeing the dev(s) in the HS recommendation thread.
I definitely found it enjoyable, I'd like to offer some of my thoughts and constructive criticism to F and B (at least I hope it comes off as constructive lol). Skip to the
TLDR if yall don't wanna read allat.
First off, yes the start is very rough. I won't go too into depth as I know you guys have already touched on this. The fact that this game is more of a test run/way to develop some skills so that your future projects will be even more polished is a smart move in my opinion. Although you could say this means Eden is more "experimental" or "less serious" doesn't detract from the experience at all. I also admire the positive attitude from the devs. Clear communication, self reflection, drive to learn and improve, involvement with the community. Perhaps it's my misconception but It feels like such a rare thing to see from devs these days. Definitely a breath of fresh air. Now to get into the meat of things.
Graphics: As stated before in the initial release the graphics left much to be desired. Poor lighting, graphical settings, low texture assets. But by version 0.4 and judging by recent practice renders I would have to agree that the quality improves to a level that is in the upper echelon of HS2 games and fast approaching what you can realistically squeeze out of HS2/NEO. I'm sure that myself and the vast majority of players have absolutely no need to worry about the visual aspects of the game for the foreseeable future.
Story: I'll be honest it's not some literary masterpiece or peak fantasy worldbuilding. It definitely tends toward the tropey side. If you were really to dissect the magic system and setting I'm sure you would find more holes than a piece of swiss cheese. However having such rigorous demands for a porn game is unrealistic and I'm aware of that (as are the devs I'm sure). There are even several meta/4th wall moments where such plot holes are explicitly made fun of. For the purpose of an AVN the setting is more than sufficient for drawing in and entertaining the player and setting up the overarching narrative. Plenty of opportunity for intrigue, adventure, and character development. Thus, aside from personal nitpicks I have no serious complaints here.
Humor: It's very on the nose. I can see it being hit or miss. It will definitely appeal more to a certain group of people. "Chronically online" as the game puts it. You definitely have to be entrenched in internet culture to fully appreciate everything. However I don't mind it (maybe because I'm also chronically online). At worst the jokes are bearable, there's nothing so egregious to the point it would turn me off from the game. Some jokes (MC's Plants, Richard, Green eggs, the Oracle) I even found pretty good. You could maybe argue the references are a bit too much. I'm inclined to agree but I feel like it fits the style of the game. In the end you cant please everyone so why not continue making the game that the dev envisions and finds enjoyable?
Characters: This is where it might get a bit subjective and more based on my personal opinion. I'll split this into visuals and character traits. Visually the main cast doesn't pop out at me. Not to say that they're unattractive but they haven't reached a certain level for me (perhaps aside from Sophia). Of course this is at no fault to the devs since this is purely due to my own aesthetics. But it also hurts a little when I see characters like Neira, Sahar, even that one vendor girl from the festival who doesn't even have a name and they all look much more appealing to me than the main cast. Alas what can you do, it's impossible to please everyone. And again no hate to the devs. When it comes to the character arcs/personality I find things much more palatable. While again it is a bit tropey and things naturally revolve around the MC (I mean it is a harem AVN) the characters still have personality. They have motivations and agency. They have struggles and development. They start off seeming superficial and one dimensional but like an onion all you need to do is peel back a few layers. And of course this is most likely due to the dev constantly seeking to improve and taking advice and feedback. Some of the things that kinda irked me at the start i.e.
(Gianna sucking MC off minutes after meeting him, Natasha seemingly not giving a fuck that the MC brushes her off after she attempts to clarify their relationship but then proceeds to go full pokemon trainer and start collecting harem members, Girls being instantly drawn to MC like flies) are actually later explained and justified in (at least in my opinion) a relatively satisfying way. Of course there's always some suspension of belief needed (as with basically every other game). But it's a porn game. If I really wanted that much realism I'd go outside.
Music/Sound: This is probably my greatest gripe about the game. It starts off bad with version 0.1, is the most egregious in 0.2, but slowly recovers to an acceptable state in the following updates. What exactly am I talking about? It's like the devs just decided to take their favorite OSTs from every game/anime they ever played and mash it into one incongruent abomination plus some. Here's a list JUST the ones I was able to catch: Halo, SAO, Minecraft, Mario, Stardew Valley, Naruto, Undertale, Hollow Knight, Phoenix Wright, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda (and not just one game but three: MM, OOT, and BOTW), Pokemon, Sonic, Chrono Trigger, Dark Souls. And then on top of that add your usual stock music, occasional random references like the kahoot or wii theme, and for the cherry on top classical music like Passacaglia and Clair de lune. Not that these songs are by themselves bad or that they wouldn't be able to fit the mood. But when you happen to recognize them and when it seems like every 10 renders the music just has to switch for no apparent reason it just takes you out of it so badly. And then after you just got bombarded with an entire spotify playlist's worth of music there's occasional stretches where there's randomly just 0 sound at all. In other words the music feels like its used haphazardly just for the sake of it instead of trying to fit the mood/situation. This isn't even mentioning the potential legal issues. When it comes to sound/SFX while there is a definite increase in later updates there's still potential for more utilization especially in fight/action/sex scenes.
Sex Scenes: Too short and not enough buildup. I won't go into the argument of porn vs plot here. The fact of the matter is that this is a harem porn game and I don't believe it's trying to be or advertising itself to be anything else. I've been analyzing reviews/discussion long enough to understand the general expectations of players. It's fine if you're making a plot focused game or don't care much about the adult aspect of it. As long as you're transparent about it and have realistic expectations. This game on the other hand is not one of those games. You're clearly here to have fun sexy times with hot girls in a fantasy world. But when you get constant scene after scene of teasing and then when its time to finally cash in? Pure disappointment. For example:
You get sucked into a magical room pumped full of aphrodisiac along with Ravena. Oh boy cant wait for hours of nonstop fucking in every way you could possibly imagine right? Instead you get a scene barely 50 renders long. She sucks MC off for 5 renders. MC cums. That's it. MC doesn't even make her cum. But Ravena is somehow completely satisfied and just goes "teehee lets do this again sometime". Still in a room full of aphrodisiac btw.
UI/GUI: The fact that it's custom and not stock Ren'Py already gives some points. However I still feel like the overall design, layout, fonts, etc. could use some polish. This is just my own opinion of course based on what I've seen in other games and personal taste. But I feel like there's at least some objectivity to this. For example, I'm not sure if it's just my game but the replay/bio screen seems broken. Why is Ravena being covered up?
Gameplay/Puzzles: There's some nice little puzzles and Quick Time Events. Nothing particularly hard and no walkthrough needed if you have a functioning brain. I don't mind them. Adds some nice little flavor to the game. If you absolutely can't stand them, the dev will be adding a function to skip them. No harm no foul. My only critique is that some of the clickable items that are small need their hitboxes increased/adjusted. Perhaps this is only on my end but it's annoying having to find the pixel perfect spot to click just to pick up a key or something. I'm interested to see the devs leaning more into this and possibly adding some more interactive/harder puzzles in the future.
TLDR;
I want to acknowledge the devs. With a clear sense of direction and constant strive for improvement. The no bullshit attitude is amazing. It definitely inspires me and should serve as inspiration for other devs (both current and future). I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for Eden and future projects. From what I've seen so far I have very high hopes.
TLDR2 Electric Boogaloo;
I'd just like to concisely summarize my advice for F & B if you guys couldn't be bothered to read the above. Although some of the later ones are just personal opinions that you guys don't have to take into account.
1. I'd advise to fix the music situation. Having so many notable songs from various franchises is a recipe for disaster. Copyright and DMCA are no joke. Generally for smaller creators or for very brief one off scenes is any of these big companies really gonna notice and give a shit? Probably not. But you always run the risk. Especially as your following grows bigger and your patron numbers go up. It would be very sad if the ban hammer happened to come down and you took a hit to your financial support. Just looking out.
2. Please put more focus on the sex scenes. The length, dialogue, buildup, variety, etc. As of now they seem a bit of an afterthought. They don't have to be some perfect artistic masterpiece with crazy custom animations. But a little more foreplay, little more dirty talk, different positions/situations. Me personally I'm not bothered, I was always more of a plot enjoyer. But some of the people on here will eat you alive. I'd hate to see you get discouraged reading all the scathing criticism from the rabid horndog hivemind. Plus I think better porn will help grow your following/supporters. Experiment a bit!
3. Consider playing around with more SFX. For fights, sex scenes, puzzles, etc. No need for master level sound design. But a little bit here and there can really increase the immersion/enjoyment. Of course some people don't care about sound and just mute everything. Whether it's worth the effort or not you guys can consider.
4. Maybe work on the UI. This is a relatively minor thing. I mean are 90% players even gonna give a shit? They just wanna see hot girls and tits. But for some of us it really does make a difference. The title screen, menu fonts, title font, choice boxes. Maybe add a simple bio for each girl. Even something small like the UI during quick time events. Make it easier to find/click things during puzzles. Doesn't have to be done all at once. A tweak here and there every update. Iterating upon itself. Realistically it's not the most productive use of time, but I hope I'm not copium when I say people appreciate the effort.
5. Consider making it clear which girls are explicitly part of the main harem or will be romanceable side characters. Again this could be lumped with the UI improvements. Like is it just the main 4 (Gianna, Natasha, Yuki, Ravena)? Is Sophia a main LI? Are we gonna be able to romance Millie? Aqua? Sahar? Potentially the other witches? Maybe even a Celestiarch or Divinearch or two?
6. I saw you already covered this in another comment but I have to reiterate that you should be cautious making too many side characters (non romanceable) that are hot af. Curse of having good character creations skills I guess. I can say for myself and others that it's peak frustration when some random npc shows up that's incredibly fine but you'll never be able to do anything with. Especially in a harem game.
7. Animations. I saw you guys were already starting to venture into that. There's a world of possibility there along with use of camera work. Nothing much more to say since I know you guys are constantly experimenting and improving. Waiting to see what you can cook up in the future!
8. Lean more into the puzzles. Maybe add some more (limited) free roaming. They could be more creative or difficult. Again some people really couldn't care less. Especially with the skip option you're adding. And the time/effort to reward ratio really might not be worth it. But us people who appreciate the creativity, effort, attention to detail really do exist!!!
9. Some people might not enjoy the humor and frequent references but I say go even harder! All in! You're never gonna be able to please everyone. It's my opinion that games should strive to be unique and tell the story they want to tell. Of course be wary about overdoing it to where it's just too much. Execution is the most important above all.
10. Maybe play around with the character models a bit? Sorry if this is a bit too much. I'm not saying the girls need a complete makeover. Maybe some tweaks here and there. The MC too even. I think you might've already done so for example with Gianna. Not sure if I'm talking out my ass but in her first appearance she looked a bit off (hollywood buccal fat removal really going rampant) but she looks much better in recent appearances. Especially when compared to some side characters I cant help but feel a sense of lacking for the main girls. Just my personal opinion though. Feel free to ignore completely.
Anyways I said I would be concise but ended up rambling. My bad

. I'll also repost a revised copy of this in the reviews (so you can ignore that) and give you guys 5 stars to bump the ratings which, despite the game having some flaws, I think you guys deserve solely for the attitude and commitment. Good luck fellas.
