Generally, adding variables is ok. But changing past variables on updates has to be done with caution.

I've loaded saves from 0.8.0 into 0.8.4 and had no problem whatsoever.

Not sure there ever was a case in which saves between versions really weren't compatible with any of Cari's games.
Mods can be another story, of course.

I did a quick comparison between the scripts for 0.8.0 vs 0.8.5. I am not terribly familiar with RenPy so I am not sure what some of it means, but I don't see anything that should be a problem if you decide not to replay. I ignored changes in previous chapters.
Here are some notable changes. Not saying where these happen, you'll have to find that out for yourself.

I can't be sure I found everything that matters, and there were various changes which I don't know at all what they mean or if they affect anything because I don't know RenPy. But there are things like this added to some choices:
Which I suspect sets a variable.
Many dialogue and description fixes which aren't important enough to replay. But I'll be replaying because I want those points and the Annie variable, and this is the first time I've not waited for the public release.
Won't be soon, because I have other things to catch up on, but sometime before 0.9 drops.
