You don't need to move the save folder, AFAIK. Each version of the game knows where the previous saves are.
There is no need to move save folders. Ren'Py stores everything in two locations so you needn't do that. (The copy in the installation directory is so that you can play every Ren'Py game on an external disk, moving from one computer to another, without losing progress. The copy in your user directory is so you can uninstall and reinstall every Ren'Py game without losing progress.) And since what you are doing is unusual, it could be exactly what is causing your problem. The save folder contains a file with persistent data which is likely to contain some information that needs to be updated for newer versions. Maybe that doesn't work correctly if the old file isn't just found in the standardized location in your user directory, where it is expected, but also in the installation directory of the new version, where it is absolutely not expected.
Only 1 location on macs. But it's not in the .app folder, so you still don't need to juggle saves - unless the dev changes the location specifically.
So you believe, but unless something's been directly stated in 0.8 that I haven't seen yet, it isn't stated anywhere. I lean toward believing Alex wasn't and Penny was, but not very strongly in either case.

A few weeks, IIRC, was the time she stated. Some of her lines at Warthogs suggest some experience on her part, but I'd bet (though not at very high stakes) "virgin" for Penny.
What makes me lean toward "not" for Alex is this (and a few of her following lines):

Sure, if you read that as "sexually on edge", rather than "psychologically" on edge. She plays mind games with people. She gives them a carefully constructed impression for the sake of rebelling against her asshole dad and all the expectations that go with her "position" in society because of her parents. It's the reason for the tats and striking out on her own.
Given where her hand was at the time, and where it went immediately afterward, I think that's a reasonable reading. Perhaps not the only reasonable reading, but certainly a reasonable reading.
Nancy obviously isn't; Annie, Nova, and Dalia are explicitly stated to be. Luna isn't stated one way or the other, but I haven't seen anyone suggest she isn't a virgin. And while I'm not confident of this with Dalia, I'd strongly suspect that neither Annie, Nova, nor Luna had "dated or experimented a little." Annie's too into MC, Luna's a social outcast, and so is Nova (though in a different way). I don't really think Dalia has either, but I don't have specific reasons I can point to.
With the exception of the characters who clearly state if they are virgins or not, I think Cari gives room for us players to make our assumptions about the characters who say nothing.

Nova is the nerdy, awkward type whereas Penny is the hot, popular and outgoing type. It´s not that crazy to assume that Nova would be the virgin and Penny isn´t. I think this is the reasoning that person is making.
